A charming town to wander round. The cathedral, begun in about 1081, is one of England's glories. The original central tower was replaced in 1322 by the octagonal lantern tower with amazing fan-vaulted timber roof that you now see. This triumph of medieval engineering is breathtaking in its beauty.
In the Stained Glass Museum you can discover the secrets of this ancient craft.
In St Mary's Street is Oliver Cromwell's House. He led the country after the execution of Charles I in 1649 and became the country's first and only (so far!) Lord protector.
