Darlington bus drivers showed their determination and grit by last week announcing a charity collection total for Darlington Memorial Hospital’s children’s ward of £985, despite efforts to thwart their charity attempts. Drivers Gary Burniston and Peter Holliday carried out the collection "on the buses" over Christmas, appealing to kind-hearted passengers for a donation in return for them dressing up in various costumes.
In just two weeks they managed to collect almost £500 and are eager to praise the overwhelming generosity of the general public. However, their efforts were very nearly spoilt after Driver Holliday had his collection bucket stolen by a youth travelling on the bus. He said: "It’s such a shame when one person has to spoil it for everyone else. In general, the feeling of Christmas spirit and charity was great on the buses and most people were pleased to be able to do something for the children. I hope that lad realises that he might as well have taken Christmas presents right out of those kids hands."
Thankfully, the amount collected in total was then matched by Stagecoach North East, in order that the children’s ward did not miss out on their total amount. The money has since been spent on medical equipment for paediatric care. Spokesperson from the hospital, Angela Boyes, had this to say: "We are very grateful for the contribution made by local people to support their local hospital, as well as the efforts of the drivers and staff at Stagecoach."
Both drivers have said that this will not deter them from any future collections and that they will continue to contribute to charitable causes in any way they can – even if it does mean having extra security!!
