Deal Castle was built by Henry VIII as an artillery fortress to counter the threat of invasion from the Catholic alliance of France and Spain during the mid-16th century.
Its huge, rounded bastions, which were designed to deflect shot, once carried 66 guns. It is a fascinating castle to explore, with long, dark passages, battlements and a massive basement which houses an exciting exhibition.
Its remarkable coastal position affords breathtaking views out to sea.
