Walmer Castle & Gardens
1 April 2006

Walmer Castle was built to withstand the wrath of the French and Spanish following Henry VIII's break with the Roman Catholic Church, but its defences have never, in fact, been put to the test.

It does, however, serve as the official residence of the Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the last Lord Warden, regularly visited Walmer. Some of the rooms used by her are open to the public as is the Queen Mother's Garden, designed by Penelope Hobhouse.
