It is anticipated that the enhanced service will offer better access to potential employment opportunities in St Andrews and Dundee (St Andrews in particular suffers from a lack of employees for the key tourist and leisure industries) as well as offering developments to the local network in St Andrews. Direct interchange is available at St Andrews bus station, Leuchars railway station and Dundee railway station, with through tickets available and convenient connections at St Andrews to Leven and the East Neuk of Fife. Furthermore, this enhanced service has the potential to assist in reducing the growing congestion problems in St Andrews and on the Tay Road Bridge.
Working with the Scottish Executive and Fife Council, Stagecoach is undertaking a three-year KickStart scheme on the route. Under the terms of this partnership, Stagecoach, Fife Council and the Scottish Executive have jointly committed just under £1 million to the campaign, which aims to be completely self-financing within three years. This investment has included the purchase of 8 new state-of-the-art, easyACCESS low floor buses to accommodate the needs of the elderly and disabled. The vehicles will also display distinct ‘Taylink 99’ branding and have the latest ‘green’ environmentally friendly engines.
Robert Andrew, Managing Director, Stagecoach Scotland said: "KickStart schemes aim to encourage people out of their cars through offering frequent, comfortable travel solutions whilst tackling the growing traffic congestion in the area. Through our partnership with the Scottish Executive and Fife Council, we are extremely pleased at being able to offer this service revision that enhances and further promotes integrated travel opportunities in the area".
Cllr Jim Philp, Fife Council Transportation Spokesperson said "Once again, through partnership working with Stagecoach, Fife Council and its Administration is able to demonstrate real improvements on one of Fife's main travel corridors. The improved frequency of service, quality of vehicle, better accessibility and closer integration with rail services all lend towards much improved travel opportunities. We are also delighted that the improved service can be launched just prior to completion of the excellent new bus station at St Andrews".
