Stagecoach invests in groundbreaking environmental programme
4 September 2008

Here at Stagecoach North East, we have begun work on the £350,000 'green programme' that was launched earlier this year.

In Spring 2008 we asked energy consultants TNEI to conduct an evaluation across each of our 6 depots and highlight measures that could be taken to make it a more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable business.  Following this report we created a five-year programme and are now investing in the first of three phases.

During the first stage we are set to invest £31,000 in initiatives that will be completed by the end of 2009.  The activity will have an immediate impact by reducing our carbon dioxide emissions by 300 tonnes, reducing energy consumption by 8 per cent and material wastage by 5 per cent.  In addition we aim to have 70% of our workforce signed up to the green programme as individuals, so they can learn ways in which to be more energy efficient at home and work.

The results will be achieved through the installation of energy monitoring systems, the insulation of plant equipment and the creation of an eco team at each depot to motivate staff.

Stage two of the programme will herald investment of £92,000 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by another 254 tonnes, reduce energy consumption and material wastage by six and two per cent respectively and ensure that 90% of the workforce is signed up to the programme by 2011.

The third and final stage of the programme requires investment of £225,000 by the end of 2013 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a further 205 tonnes, reduce energy consumption by six percent, maintain levels of material wastage and ensure that 95% of the workforce is signed up.  Work undertaken will include the induction of radiant heaters, the replacement of all high bay lighting as well as a new heating system and external insulation for the head office.

Speaking about the programme, John Conroy, Managing Director, Stagecoach North East says: "As a transport provider we believe we have a responsibility to be environmentally sound and operate a sustainable network on every level.  While we are constantly investing in our fleet to ensure that our vehicles are as technically advanced as possible, we felt that there was more that we could achieve and after much research we have identified ways in which we can be more socially responsible in terms of the environment.  The programme is groundbreaking and we hope that our work in the North East will act as a model of best practice and inspire other regions and operators to adopt similar strategies."
