Stagecoach is one of the largest bus operators in the UK and is playing a leading role in driving passenger growth on public transport across the country.
Stagecoach customers make over 35 million journeys a year across Newcastle, covering 11 million Geordie miles per year.
The company has achieved a patronage increase of 7.2% over the past year. This growth has been achieved through a variety of means, including:
- Substantial investment
- Improvements and simplification of the Newcastle network
- Close working relationships
- Providing value of money
- Strong commitment to customer service.
Stagecoach has significantly improved the quality of the Newcastle fleet by introducing 50 new double deck low-floor buses in the last year. That represents an investment of more than 6.8 million, to replace 20% of the Newcastle fleet with brand new vehicles. This investment means that almost 2/3 of the Newcastle fleet is now made up of low floor easy access buses. These buses feature step-free entrances, room for buggies and wheelchair access.
Stagecoach is also involved in a major environmental project: We operate 10 hybrid electric buses on the prestigious QuayLink bus routes to Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays. These electric buses have real potential to improve the quality of life in our city and others.
Last year we also recently launched a new ‘Kickstart’ project on Service X47 between Kingston Park and the City Centre. This new route is partly financed by the Government and is already cutting car use within the estate, with 9% of its passengers making the switch from the car. Indeed, Service X47 has been such a success, that within the first 6 months of operation, the service was already reaching targets set for its 3rd year!
Another success story is the service 62/63 (North Walbottle/ Chapel House to Killingworth). We have achieved a 10.42% patronage growth on these services over the last twelve months - and we've supported this growth by introducing 23 brand-new double deck low-floor easy-access buses onto these routes.
Stagecoach is committed to providing value for money bus travel offering a range of tickets to suit all our customers including our Megarider, Dayrider, VIP and Unirider student tickets. Discounted tickets are also available for children. After 0930am senior citizens and other concessionary pass holders travel FREE throughout Tyne and Wear.
Training and development is the foundation for delivering the high quality services that Stagecoach offers in Newcastle. Nearly half of our drivers either hold or are working towards an NVQ qualification, which is one of the best records of any operators in the country.
