Transfares are changing from Sunday 6 January 2008
21 December 2007

From 6 January 2008, buying a Transfare will be much easier. Nexus have reduced the number of tickets and zones and have made the map far simpler to understand.

Is a Transfare ticket for me?
You can buy a Transfare ticket when your journey includes travelling on more than one type of transport, e.g. Metro and bus. Transfares allow you to buy just one ticket for your journey. In general a Transfare allows you to make a journey of two legs on different types of transport. You must start the second part of your journey within 90 minutes of buying your ticket.

How do I work out the number of zones I'm travelling in?

  • The map below shows Tyne and Wear divided into just 3 zones - yellow, green and grey.
  • If your journey is entirely within just one zone (yellow, green OR grey) - you only need a 1 zone Transfare (T1 on Metro).
  • If you are travelling in the yellow AND the green zones or the green AND the grey zones - you need a 2 zone Transfare (T2 on Metro).
  • And if you are travelling in the yellow, green AND grey zones you need a 3 zone Transfare (T3 on Metro).

For example, if you're travelling from Pelaw Metro station to Washington, you would need a 2 zone Transfare, as you're travelling through the green and grey zones. (Child Transfares allow travel within all three zones).

How much do Transfares cost?
Transfares depend on how many zones you’re traveling through, and on which operator you purchase it. On Stagecoach buses, Transfares will be priced as follows:
1 zone   : £2.20
2 zones : £2.60
3 zones : £3.10
(prices correct at May 2008)

What if I start my journey on a zone boundary?
Bus stops and Metro stations on boundaries are in both zones.
For example, if you travel from Felling to Windy Nook via Heworth your whole journey is in the green zone so you need a one zone Transfare (T1 on Metro). Similarly if you travel from Felling to the Freeman Hospital via Monument your journey is entirely in the yellow zone so you need a one zone Transfare (T1 on Metro).

How do I buy one on Metro?
Simply choose either T1, T2 or T3 on the Metro ticket machine depending on how many zones you'll be travelling in, and pay.

How do I buy one on the bus or the Shields Ferry?
Just tell your bus driver or Ferry operator where you are going and they will work out what ticket you need.

Is travel on Northern Rail included?
Yes, Transfares bought on Metro or bus or Ferry will be accepted on Northern Rail services between Sunderland and the MetroCentre.
