Concessionary bus travel is about to get smarter

From Monday 6 June 2011, there’ll be a new way to use your English Concessionary Travel Card on Stagecoach North East buses.

As your travel card is also a smartcard, when you board the bus simply place your card on the ticket machine. Your journey will be recorded electronically and your ticket will print. It's easy!

What is changing?

Your English National Concessionary Travel Card has been designed so that it is also a smartcard - this means it can be read electronically by ticket machines on buses. The ticket machines on Stagecoach North East buses have the technology to enable this to happen.
You DO NOT need to apply for a new card.

How does it work?

Rather than showing your pass to the driver, you simply:
* Place the card onto the reader, photo face up and keep it there until the ticket prints
* Remove the card, take the ticket, find a seat and enjoy your journey
* Please don't slide your card on the ticket machine.
Nothing else has changed.

What if I need to use my Concessionary Travel Pass outside of the area?

We are in the process of switching the technology on all over the UK, your driver will be able to advise you on what to do.

What if my card doesn’t work?

If there is a problem, the smartcard reader will show an error message. The driver will check this message and your card and then explain what happens next.

If the driver thinks that the error is because there is a fault with your card, they will issue a ticket manually and suggest that you request a replacement pass from your local council. We have provided a list of useful numbers below.

Your card has an electronic chip, which may have become damaged and until you start using it as a smartcard you won't be aware of this.

You can help look after your card by storing it away from other cards with electronic chips in them.
