To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Western SMT as well as the company’s success of being named Bus Operator of the Year for the second year running Stagecoach West Scotland is holding a celebration weekend with a charity Open Day on Saturday 9th June 2007 at its depot in MacKinlay Place, Kilmarnock followed by a Running Day in Ayr on Sunday 10th June. The Open Day is on from 11.00am until 4.00pm and will have a transport theme, with a number of both vintage buses and modern buses on show. There will also be an opportunity for any budding bus drivers to "give it a go" and drive a bus, not to mention a chance to take an open top tour of Kilmarnock.
With exhibition stands from a number of organisations including the Police and Fire Brigade and a number of bus memorabilia stalls, there will certainly be something to interest everyone, especially the kids, with a free bouncy castle and face painting.
A free park and ride will be provided to the venue from the East Ayrshire Council Offices Car Park at London Road, Kilmarnock and a free shuttle bus will be in operation from Kilmarnock Bus Station to MacKinlay Place.
The event in aid of The Ayrshire Hospice will be opened by Willie Coffey MSP Kilmarnock & Loundon.
The Vintage Bus Service on 10th June is being run in conjunction with the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust and will use a number of restored Western Vehicles on the day. The service starts from the bus station and takes in the Seafront, Alloway and Doonfoot. The service operates frequently from 11.30am until 5.30pm
