Want to join the bus industry?
Keeping our buses on the road involves people working as part of our dedicated, versatile team. Although the vast majority of our staff are drivers, engineering and cleaning staff, there are also different roles involved including work in administration for both operations and engineering.
Could you drive for us?...
If you have good people skills, are in good health and aged 21 or over (18 – 20 years of age will be considered in some circumstances), have held a full manual car licence for at least 12 months and have a good driving record, you could be what we’re looking for in a seasonal driver.
Driving a bus involves more than just being a good driver. You will be in direct contact with our customers all day, which means you must appear presentable and be courteous and polite. As one of our drivers you would be the public face of Stagecoach Lincolnshire and therefore must be the type of person who wants to make a good impression. Experience in any aspect of retailing or customer service would be an advantage.
You will also be responsible for the cash handling aspect of running the service using an electronic ticket machine therefore you need to be both trustworthy and reasonably good at arithmetic.
Training to drive a bus...
To drive a bus you need to hold a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) licence. Haven’t got one? Don’t panic! Our team of dedicated Driving Instructors will give you 2 to 3 weeks intensive training, preparing you for the PCV driving test. If you’re successful, you will have shown that you have the skills to demonstrate that you are competent to handle a large heavy vehicle. We’ll also pay you for doing this!
A wide cross section of people travel on our buses, a number of which are older, less able people and of course schoolchildren. As a driver you must be able to take responsibility for the care of these more vulnerable customers and ensure that their journey is safe and pleasant. Our New Driver Training Programme will give you the skills and confidence needed to deal with all types of people who may require extra help.
Most of our work is focused between the core working hours of 7am and 7pm on a shift basis, although some duties will involve early mornings, late evenings, Sunday working and Bank Holidays. You will be required to work either 5 days out of 7, with 2 days off. Although you’ll be required to work on Saturdays and Sundays, there are some weekends off including occasional long weekend breaks.
Job Security Government policy encourages people to use public transport leading to a growing demand, so there’ll always be a need for bus drivers.
Earning Potential After initial training your rate of pay will be £7.85 per hour rising to £8.38 after 3 years continuous service.
Sick Pay Staff reliability is essential in the bus industry. If a driver does not turn up for work; our customers may not get to their destinations on time. After a qualifying period we operate a sick pay scheme designed to support you if you’re taken ill.
Holidays You will accumulate holidays through the summer season which can be taken or paid at source when your Fixed Term Contract expires.
Pension The Company operates a stakeholder pension scheme, which you are welcome to join should a full time position become available
Free Bus Travel Allows you and your partner to travel free of charge on any Stagecoach UK Bus services nationwide (with the exception of Megabus.com services) during your seasonal Fixed Term Contract and your children, providing they are under 16, will travel free whenever you or your partner are with them.
Uniform We’ll give you a smart uniform to wear at all times whilst on duty.
