Not to worry! We’ve put together a few ideas for fun-filled autumnal activities for the whole family.
Fruit picking is fun! Especially berry picking when you can play ‘one for the basket, one for me’. Alas, soft fruit season is over for another year so it’s time to think about a different kind of fruit picking. Autumn is the ideal time to harvest apples and, although it’s not as practical to play ‘one for the basket...’ you can still head home with a bumper crop of apples and great family memories. Find out if there’s a Pick-your-own farm near you.
So, you’ve been apple picking and have enough fruit to feed a small army. Now what? It’s time to channel your inner Mary Berry and churn out some delicious baked treats. Baking is a great activity to involve kids in, whether it’s rolling out dough, measuring ingredients or, our favourite, licking the spoon*. Plus, the recipe options are endless – apple pie, apple strudel, caramel apple cheesecake, apple fritters. Don’t just take our word for it; check out 50 ways with apples for all your apple-y needs.
*Make sure to only use egg-free recipes for spoon licking!
A scavenger hunt is lots of fun for younger kids as it gets them out in the fresh air and playing in the dirt (put that hand sanitiser away, a little dirt is a good thing!). Put together a list of items – conkers, different coloured leaves, acorns – and go to your local park/woodland to see how many they can find. For pre-made lists, the Woodland Trust has got your back.
Much like the apple picking, if you’ve gathered up a variety of woodland treasures and you're going to need to find something to do with them, otherwise they'll roll about in the boot of your car until Spring. Help your kids turn loose leaves into a crown fit for a fairy princess or use Sycamore tree seeds to create Christmas decorations with a little glue and glitter. If all else fails, string up those conkers and have a good old knock-out competition*. *Health & safety rules should always be observed!
Did you know that your chiminea has more uses than just keeping you warm when your summer barbecue party carries on into the wee small hours? For a tasty dessert treat, we’re stealing a sweet idea from our friends across the pond so, fire up the wood burner and get your s’more on! You can buy s’mores kits now, with genuine ingredients from the good ol’ US of A, but, let’s face it, you can’t beat British chocolate. Pop a marshmallow (or two, or three...) onto a skewer (be careful!) and roast over the fire til cripsy and golden. Then take a digestive biscuit, top it with 4 squares of chocolate (we recommend Dairy Milk for ultimate meltability), carefully place a perfectly toasted marshmallow on top and then squeeze the whole lot together with a second digestive biscuit. Not got an outdoor fire? Cheat and pop them under the grill!
Is there anything more autumnal than pumpkins? Carving on Halloween, Pumpkin soup and of course, the famed pumpkin-spiced latte - but how about trying something new? There are loads of farms in the UK that let you pick your own pumpkins, most of them even have an array of Halloween-themed events on throughout October, so it's fun for all the family! Find the best places to pick your own pumpkins near you.
This one’s pretty self explanatory. It’s autumn. It’s Britain. It rains. A lot. Why let that spoil the fun? Dust off your wellies and find the biggest and best puddles to jump around in. If it was good enough for Gene Kelly, it’s good enough for us! After you’re all jumped out, heat yourself up with a steaming mug of hot chocolate with extra marshmallows – you deserve it!
