Just like Christmas, Valentine’s Day comes around at the same time every year and yet, it still seems to take some people by surprise! Frantic last minute calls are made to try to reserve a table at a fancy restaurant, flowers and chocolates are picked up at the supermarket, or if you’re really running late, the petrol station.
There’s still a whole week to go before the big day, so why not make plans for something a little different this year. Whether it’s your first Valentine’s Day together or your fortieth, make it one to remember.
Plan your own scavenger hunt
This is the perfect way to show your loved one that you pay attention to them and value the time you’ve spent with them. The best part is it’s an inexpensive gift and the fun is in solving the clues and revisiting places you’ve been to together. Use pictures, riddles and word searches to guide your partner through the hunt, and end up at your favourite bar to celebrate with a tipple or two.
Go on a ghost walk
While it’s not for everyone (and you really need to know your audience or this could go horribly wrong!) going on a ghost walk can be a great way to spend time together while learning about the ghostly history of your local area. Most cities have their share of ghoulish tales to tell – here are a few to check out:
Try your hand at mini golf
If you’re looking for a fun way to spend the day, then mini golf should be high on your list. There are so many great themed courses, both indoor and outdoor, including Dinosaurs, Pirates and, our personal favourite, Junkyard. A little healthy competition is good for a relationship so brush up on your putting skills – winner buys dinner!
Create your own fragrance
Perfume and aftershave choices are very personal; after all, it’s the fragrance that defines you. The Perfume Studio offers a wide range of packages that allow you to create your own scent. Sharing this experience with your partner means that you’ll learn more about what each other likes in a fragrance, making it easier to choose gifts in the future!
Create your own gin
If perfume isn’t your sort of thing, why not try creating your own gin? The gin industry has exploded in popularity over the past few years, with new distilleries and flavours popping up faster than you can say “G & T”. Combine your gin-making with dinner or an overnight stay for a Valentine’s Day win!
Go on safari...well, a safari supper
First popular in the early 1960s, the safari supper has made a resurgence in recent years. While it usually consists of a group of friends having a starter at one house, moving to the next for the main course and finishing with dessert at a third house, we think it’s a great option for couples this Valentine’s Day. Choose a favourite bar to begin your evening with an aperitif, then grab your coats and head to your chosen restaurant for starters and, with each course, move to another restaurant, revisiting some old haunts from earlier in your relationship. Why not grab a dayrider and take the bus to each destination, meaning you can enjoy a libation with each course without having to worry about who’ll be the designated driver.
If your relationship is new, an Escape Room is a great choice of date. You can either choose to battle it out as a couple, or team up with your coupley friends and work together to escape. It’s a real test of cooperation, listening and reasoning so it’s a perfect way to find out if your relationship is built to last. Survive the Escape Room and you can survive most things!
