Canterbury Festival is delighted to be working with a young local designer and Stagecoach, official transport partner, to raise the Festival’s profile with a special Canterbury Festival bus. Jack Bounds, a design student from Whitstable, has been completing a summer of work experience with Canterbury Festival. Jack said:
‘It’s been great working at Canterbury Festival and I feel privileged to have been given responsibility for such a large project. Seeing my work on the side of a bus is a pretty surreal feeling.’
Stagecoach Commercial Director Matthew Arnold said, ‘We have a long-standing association with Canterbury Festival having been sponsors for the past 15 years. It's an international spectacle and well established as a major feature on the cultural event calendar. We're excited to be involved again this year; there are 200 events during the two weeks and we're encouraging everyone from around the region to come to Canterbury and be inspired.’
Festival Director Rosie Turner said, ‘Stagecoach is one of our longstanding sponsors, closely associated with the Festival’s work with young people. As well as the fortnight of international shows each October, the Festival works year-round to encourage young people in the arts. It’s really exciting that a young designer working at the Festival has been able to showcase his talents by designing the Festival/Stagecoach branding for our special bus. Jack’s work will fly the flag for our upcoming Festival and raise awareness of Stagecoach’s support of arts in our community.’
This year’s Festival programme includes Sir Bryn Terfel and Dame Evelyn Glennie, who lead a classical line up which features VOCES8 and Rachel Podger, The King’s Singers and pianist Melvyn Tan.
Purveyors of life-affirming pop, The Feeling, will be performing at the Marlowe Theatre on their first tour in over two years. They’ll be followed by Brit Award nominated singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor who is performing her greatest hits accompanied by a full band and string section. Country music sensations The Shires will be bringing their pop-infused new album to Canterbury in what is sure to be one of the highlights of the Festival.
This year promises a fascinating series of talks with radio presenter John Suchet, historian David Starkey, broadcaster Alice Roberts, Blue Planet wildlife cameraman Doug Allan, and ‘Angry Chef’ Anthony Warner – and many more bringing their unique expertise for us to enjoy.
The Festival Spiegeltent returns with stunning circus performers Barely Methodical Troupe, cabaret star Le Gateau Chocolat and Lady Luck Cabaret and brilliant saxophonist, YolanDa Brown. A family friendly programme of dance, music, story-telling and acrobatics will be accompanied by free Arts Award workshops. Throughout the Festival, the next generation of young local musicians perform in lunchtime school concerts in the Spiegeltent; while Canterbury Christ Church University presents a series of concerts at St Gregory’s Centre for Music, celebrating talent right on our doorstep.
The spotlight remains on local talent with Made in Kent which continues to celebrate and develop gifted performers from across the county. Made in Kent: Dance will showcase three local choreographers. Winners of Make in Kent: Theatre, Canterbury Academy’s Everest Theatre Groups will be performing their play T R A V E L E R. Made in Kent: Comedy will see finalists perform in front of a live Festival audience and Track Record features local bands, giving them support and career development opportunities.
