Things to do in Thanet in Summer 2019

From the dizzying heights of Margate’s amusement park to the sunny shores of Broadstairs, families up and down Kent are looking for something fun to kick-start their summer. The question is where to go? With so many attractions and events taking place over the summer period, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From incredible exhibitions to food festivals, we think there’s something for both tourists and locals alike in Thanet this summer! 

 

Margate

Dreamland:

One of the oldest surviving amusement parks in the UK, Dreamland Margate is a world-class visitor attraction offering all the fun of a festival for the whole family.  Located opposite the golden sands of Margate, visitors can enjoy vintage, family and thrill rides, pop-up entertainment, live music and art installations, alongside eclectic bars and street food.

Roller Coast Festival: Friday 19 July - Sunday 1 Septemer

This summer Dreamland presents…Roller Coast Festival! The brand new summer festival includes free events and incredible entertainment every week throughout the summer holidays to keep those Little Dreamers happy. Get ready for six weeks of super-charged, brain-bending, back-flipping, song bursting summer, daily entertainment for little kids and big kids from 19th July right through to 1st September. Getting there by bus...
Dreamland is served by route 8, 8A and 8X buses every 15 minutes during the daytime with buses up to 22:15 in the evening. If you’re travelling from elsewhere in Thanet you can hop on a Thanet Loop bus from Broadstairs, Westwood, Ramsgate or Cliftonville. Buses run about every 8 minutes throughout the day and serve Cecil Street in Margate which is a short walking distance from Dreamland. Turner Contemporary:

Turner Contemporary is one of the UK’s leading art galleries. Situated on Margate seafront, on the same site where Turner stayed when visiting the town, Turner Contemporary presents a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, events and learning opportunities which make intriguing links between historic and contemporary art. The gallery offers a space for everyone to discover different ways of seeing, thinking and learning.

Seaside: Photographed - running until Sunday 8 September

This major exhibition will examine the relationship between photographers, photography and the British seaside from the 1850s to the present. It is Turner Contemporary’s first ever photography exhibition.You can find out more about this exhibit by visiting the Turner Contemporary website here.

 

Getting there by bus...

Get to the Turner Contemporary on the Thanet Loop bus from all the major towns in Thanet. Loop buses run every 7 to 8 minutes throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays and every 10 minutes on Sundays. The last bus back to Cliftonville, Broadstairs and Dumpton Park is at 23:30 every day, and the last bus back to Westwood and Ramsgate is at 23:15 on Mondays to Thursdays and Sundays. Broadstairs Folk Week: Friday 9 August - Friday 16 August

It’s a traditional folk music and dance festival – that’s how it began – and that remains right at the heart of Folk Week. Over the past 54 years, the festival has become a magnet for people who love authentic music, the opportunity to dance and sing and meet up with an extended family of every generation and from around the world. Get to Broadstairs on the Thanet Loop bus from all the major towns in Thanet. Loop buses run every 7 to 8 minutes throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays and every 10 minutes on Sundays. The last bus back to Ramsgate is at 23:47 every day, and the last bus back to Cliftonville and Margate is at 23:28 on Mondays to Thursdays and Sundays. On Friday and Saturday nights there is a bus at 00:33 and 01:33. Use the bus stops along the High Street or Queens Road. Please see our website to plan your journey

Ramsgate Festival of Sound: Saturday 20 July - Sunday 28 July

This year’s theme for the Ramsgate Festival Of Sound is “It’s A Matter Of Time.” One week, 40 artists, dozens of events. From live music, film screenings, director Q&As, creative workshops and curated talks to immersive & captivating sound installations. You can view the full itinerary here

 

Ramsgate Tunnels – Wednesdays to Sundays

Explore the underground tunnels and unlock the history of a hidden underground city which evolved from the largest and only known Civilian Deep Shelter Aid Precaution Scheme authorised by Central Government.

The last bus back to Ramsgate Rail Station and Westwood is at midnight every day, and the last bus back to Broadstairs, Cliftonville and Margate is at 23:20 on Mondays to Thursdays and 22:43 on Sundays. Westwood Cross

Enjoy a relaxed family experience at Thanet’s shopping centre, Westwood Cross. With over 50 high street stores, cafes and restaurants to choose from there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Or if you want to relax with your feet up, why not head over to the on-site Cinema and chow down on a bucket of popcorn whilst watching the latest blockbuster. Ah retail therapy never sounded so good!

Getting there by bus...

There are frequent buses to and from Westwood Cross serving the bus hub on the Margate Road side of the shopping centre. The number 8 bus from Canterbury, Birchington and Westgate runs every 30 minutes throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays and hourly on Sundays. The last bus back to Canterbury is at 18:23 on Mondays to Saturdays and 17:28 on Sundays. The Thanet Loop bus runs every 7 to 8 minutes throughout the day on Mondays to Saturdays and every 10 minutes on Sundays, serving all major towns around Thanet.
