Stagecoach is proud to sponsor POW! Thanet's 2019 Opening Ceremony. 

This year marks POW!’s fourth annual festival commemorating International Women’s Day – a festival that explores the issues and challenges women and girls face today and celebrates our achievements so far. 

Last year the festival attracted 3,400 visitors and aims to welcome even more to the ten day programme of exhibitions, lives performances, films, workshops and discussions.

Here are just a few events taking place over the ten day festival:

Date: Friday 8 March

Time: 5pm - 7pm

Location: 5pm - Margate Station (Procession), 6pm - Turner Contemporary (Festival Opening)

Cost: Free donations welcome

Join us on International Women’s Day for the spectacular opening of POW! 2019. The procession starts at Margate station and finishes at the Turner Contemporary where Margate Social Singing Choir and young people, including those involved in the Creative Voices project, supported by Dreamland, will set the festival off with a bang.

Get to Margate Station & Turner Contemporary on the Thanet Loop bus from all the major towns in Thanet. With local council elections just two months away - Question Time will allow members of the public to hear from first-time female candidates across the political spectrum and question them about their plans. The event will be sketched by artist Jan Wheatley who has used Facebook to present illustrated interviews with refugees in the Calais Jungle in 2016.

Songs for Freedom is a workshop combining hearts and voices in gospel blues session. Join celebrated jazz vocalist Sabina Desir who will demonstrate the power of words through collaborative voices. Open to all ages and vocal abilities with a focus on inclusion and fun!

The Mermaid’s Purse

The spirit on the sea and all its ancient, haunting majesty is celebrated with an evening of broken folk, spoken word and music in the spiritual surroundings of the Sailor’s Church. Produced by jazz musician Jessica Lauren, performers include the spellbinding broken-folk duo Lunatraktors, alongside Lizzie Bell, Daisy Beau and the award-winning poet Neelam Saredia-Brayley.

Nanci & Phoebe are at the forefront of this generation’s jungle sounds. Based in Brixton, the duo have been working closely with Congo Natty – aka Rebel MC who pioneered the jungle movement back in the 90s – since 2009, representing a unity that ignores race, age and social barriers.
