Stagecoach South Wales shortlisted for Environment Award at prestigious routeone Awards

15 Aug 2024

Stagecoach South Wales has been shortlisted in the Environment Award category due to its commitment to a sustainable future.

In 2022, Stagecoach invested £7 million into a brand-new bus depot in Cwmbran, built to be as green as possible. The depot features a bus wash with a water recycling system, 10 electric vehicle charging bays, nine new servicing lanes, each featuring emission testing and lubricant hoses, infrastructure for future electric vehicles, intelligent heating, solar panels and an environmentally friendly grass roof for rainwater harvesting.

Stagecoach has recently invested £1.6 million in nine brand new single deck buses. The new slimline solo vehicles feature Euro VI engines, which are cleaner engines helping to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality across the borough as older buses are replaced, delivering a reduction of around 70% in NOx.

The changes don’t stop there, Stagecoach aims to fit LED lighting across all depots by the end of 2024. This will enhance the depots’ EPC score, and they are soon to have 10 new vehicles delivered.

As part of its commitment to a green agenda, Stagecoach has a dedicated Green Champion who recently partnered with The Salvation Army to recycle old uniforms. Alud, the Green Champion, rallied his colleagues to join him in manually removing the branding to make the clothing suitable for recycling. This initiative saw Stagecoach South Wales donate over 45 bags of recycled uniforms.

Speaking of the news, Martin Gibbon, Managing Director of Stagecoach South Wales, said:

“We’re thrilled to have been shortlisted for the Environment Award at the routeone Awards.

“Our teams across South Wales have been working hard to find greener, innovative solutions. Whether that’s been individuals finding opportunities in their local depots or on a bigger scale with our new buses across South Wales.

“I’m looking forward to continuing our green journey with exciting plans coming for the rest of the year.”
