Stagecoach announces changes to X46 bus service

26 Oct 2016

  • New timetable, starting 28 November, refocused on key commuter and leisure journeys
  • Route, renamed ‘46’, will continue to serve Kingskerswell
  • New stop added at Matford Park & Ride, providing additional connections
  • Change in usage patterns catalyst for revised service

Stagecoach South West has announced that, starting 28 November 2016, a new timetable is being introduced on the X46, connecting Torbay with Exeter.

The timetable will operate from Monday to Saturday and refocuses the service on delivering key commuter and leisure trips. The service, renamed the ‘46’, will have four journeys a day in either direction. Buses will continue to serve Kingskerswell and there will be an additional stop at Matford Park & Ride, proving new connections to Marsh Barton, Exe Bridges and South Street.

The new timetable is attributable to changes in usage patterns that developed during the construction of the South Devon Highway. Long-term disruption on the roads, combined with council-funded improvements to the rail service, resulted in a significant drop in passenger numbers. The numbers have not returned since the road opened despite Stagecoach investing in high specification ‘Gold’ buses for the route that feature leather seats and free Wi-Fi.

Robert Williams, Commercial Director for Stagecoach South West, commented: “We have had to balance maintaining a regular bus connection between Torbay and Exeter with keeping it economically viable. I understand that this is a big change for our customers however I hope, by doing this, we will be able to continue to run the service in the longer term.”

Departures from Torquay Strand will be at 0700 (school days) or 0715 (school holidays), 1000, 1230 and 1600. Departures from Exeter bus station will be at 0840, 1115, 1445 and 1730. The first departure from Torbay and the last from Exeter will also serve Paignton bus station. New timetables will be available online shortly at and in print from the usual outlets.
