Face coverings are compulsory when using public transport in England and Scotland. In Wales it is compulsory to wear a three layer face covering on public transport. It is also now compulsory to wear face coverings when using indoor public transport hubs in England only.

New bus service changes announced for Barnsley & Rotherham

Leading bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire has announced a number of service alterations in Barnsley and Rotherham to help improve punctuality and services, following feedback from customers and front line staff.


From Saturday 30 January minor changes will be made to some Stagecoach bus services in Barnsley and the Dearne Valley. The X19 Monday to Friday journey at 06:00 from Barnsley to Doncaster and Robin Hood Airport will be retimed to depart at 05:55 hrs, with slightly increased journey time to improve punctuality. An additional stop for the X19 will be added at Aldi, Highgate on journeys towards Barnsley.

On route 20, the 15:03 Penistone - Barnsley journey during school holidays will be replaced by a service 21 at 14:52 from Penistone to Barnsley, providing an extra connection to Cubley. Due to problems with parked cars at school finishing time, the service 21 journey at 15:03 from Penistone Grammar School – Barnsley and the service 21 at 14:37 from Barnsley to Penistone will no longer serve Clarel Street and the Bluebell Estate.

The Service 22 Barnsley – Gilroyd Monday to Friday journey at 0837 hrs from Barnsley has been retimed to depart at 08:32hrs.

To compliment the introduction of new buses to the route, service 22X will see some minor timetable changes, particularly on Sundays to coordinate more effectively with services 222 and 226.

On service 28 the 05:22 hrs Hemsworth – Barnsley Monday to Friday journey has been speeded up to arrive in Barnsley slightly earlier than it does at present.

Royston area provision is improved, with the service 59A journeys revised to operate as service 59, providing Cross Lane with two buses an hour in both directions. The terminus on Station Road will be amended to the lay-by opposite the Police Station.

The route on the service 217 will be amended at Goldthorpe from Highgate Lane via Commercial Road to the Barnsley Road roundabout, serving the Aldi Distribution Centre and new Aldi store in both directions.            

The morning peak timetable on service 218 will be revised -with some additional journey time allowed to help improve punctuality – while the morning peak timetable on service 219 will also be revised to better coordinate with the 218.

The 220 route will be amended between Wombwell Rail Station and Wombwell Centre to run via Wilson Street along the 67 route. The frequency of services 220, 221 and the route of the 221 will not change, although a new timetable will be introduced on both routes to help improve punctuality. The Monday to Saturday daytime combined frequency of buses between Doncaster, Conisbrough and Mexborough will be reduced from every 10 minutes to every 15 minutes.

The 222 service will be revised to operate between Barnsley and Mexborough only, with a new timetable to improve coordination with services 22X and 226 and to assist punctuality. A new timetable will be introduced on service 226 to improve coordination with 22X and 222 and assist with punctuality.

There will also be some minor changes to the times of service 228.
