Smart move by Valerie to win travel prize after public transport switch

A Sheffield university manager who swapped cars for public transport to make her journey to work greener has won a top travel competition.

 

Valerie Cotter, a manager with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Sheffield was picked out as the winner of the StagecoachSmart card competition.

 

Valerie, a former bus conductor in Dublin, was presented with an iPad by bus operator Stagecoach after registering her new StagecoachSmart card at stagecoachbus.com.

 

The competition was launched to celebrate the introduction of StagecoachSmart cards, issued by drivers on Stagecoach buses throughout South Yorkshire and Derbyshire for the first time.

 

Valerie, who lives in Stannington, said: “Since joining the University of Sheffield, I've been impressed with the organisation’s green transport policies so I decided to give up using my car.

 

“This has been an excellent decision as getting to work using a combination of Stagecoach buses and trams is very reliable and cost effective.

 

“I'm very fond of public transport since my own first student job as a bus conductor in Dublin many years ago. Now I travel with Stagecoach every working day, getting a StagecoachSmart card made good sense.

 

“It has been a genuinely helpful use of technology which makes a really practical difference to my daily commute. It means no more fumbling for change and I can renew monthly online. I am delighted to win the competition.” 

 

Customers who board any Stagecoach bus and buy a Stagecoach 7 day megarider or 7 day TravelMaster CityBus, CityWide, RConnect or SYConnect ticket now have their ticket issued on a reusable StagecoachSmart travel card for bus travel in South Yorkshire and Chesterfield.

 

John Young, commercial director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “As well as purchasing StagecoachSmart travel cards on board, people getting on the bus with a StagecoachSmart card can also ask the driver to top up their card with a one or seven-day ticket.

 

“It makes travel more convenient for customers and registering the card means customers are protected if it is lost or stolen, and you can also top up a StagecoachSmart online.”
