Get in the festive spirit with a trip to a local Christmas Market

09 Nov 2018

The Christmas season is upon us once again, bringing with it a great selection of Christmas inspired markets which offer heaps of new foods to try and gift ideas for the whole family. Our handy guide below shows you where to head for some festive fun and just how easy getting around can be with the help of Stagecoach.

A piece of Germany will be landing in Leeds

Leeds’ 'Christkindelmarkt'  is one of the biggest and most established Christmas markets in the UK, featuring traditional, wooden chalet-style stalls and cosy indoor hideaways. With over 40 stalls and a number of places to relax and refresh, we at Stagecoach are helping to make the journey there as stress-free as possible. Thousands of eager shoppers descend on Leeds each year for their famous market, so if you’re travelling from Barnsley avoid the chaos of the traffic and the hassle of parking by taking our X10 express service, where you can enjoy free wifi and USB charging points. With the market running from Friday the 9th of November right up until Christmas Eve – there’s no excuse not to visit!

Come and meet Santa in Sheffield

From Wednesday the 14th of November right up until Christmas Eve, the Christmas market will once again arrive in Sheffield, featuring over 50 stalls spread out across Fargate, Town Hall Square and Peace Gardens. The market is the place to go if you are looking for decorative gifts and handmade trinkets, or if you are in the mood to try some of the many treats and delicacies on offer and then relax in the Sleigh Bar with a glass of mulled wine. You can easily make it into a fun day out for the kids with a stop at Santa's Grotto which offers photo opportunities and a gift for every child. Sheffield locals have bags of options when it comes to getting to the market, but if you want to forgo the stress of navigating the city-centre traffic, our online journey planner   can show you just how easy getting around Sheffield can be. If you’re travelling from further afield, visit our website to get to grips with the many travel options from Barnsley or Chesterfield including the X17 Gold route with its brand new buses and new connections. It’s a great excuse to forget the car, avoid the car park commotion and catch the bus…meaning you can call at a pub or two before you set off home…

'Bright Nights' are on their way to Barnsley...

Barnsley will be celebrating the run up to Christmas in style with its ‘Bright Nights’ four day extravaganza. There will be Christmas stalls, carol singers, funfair rides, family entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display. The event takes place each evening between the 28th of November and the 1st of December, so if you fancy stopping by, you can take advantage of our new Barnsley eveningrider Plus which will get you there and back for just £2.50!

The Etsy Made Local market is also back again this year at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley (conveniently just across the road from the bus station!) and will be full of food, drink, unique and interesting handmade crafts and also live music! It is taking place on Saturday the 3rd of December and is definitely worth a note in your diary.

Stalls full of delights are winging their way to Wakefield

The Christmas market might only be visiting Wakefield for a few short days, but it has lots to offer, so make the most of it while you can! From artisan food and drink, clothing, cosmetics and jewellery to unique decorations for your home and garden; it’s well worth a trip. It lands on Friday the 23rd of November, sticking around til Sunday (and then the same the following weekend) so plan your travel in advance to make sure you don’t miss out! With buses between Barnsley and Wakefield up to every 30 minutes, and our app which lets you check your bus’ arrival in real-time, you’re all set to browse the stalls for some special and unusual gift ideas.

Santa and his friend Paddington Bear are checking into Chesterfield...

There’s some exciting stuff going off in Chesterfield over the next few days, with Santa himself opening the special Post Office at Vicar Lane shopping centre on Saturday the 17th, which comes equipped with all children need to send their letter to Santa this Christmas, including pens, paper, the all-important post box and is of course run by Santa’s elves.

The following day, an indoor and outdoor festive market will be in town to celebrate the Christmas lights switch on. There will be fairground rides and an opportunity to meet not only Santa, but Paddington Bear too! With all this happening just a stone's throw away from the bus station, you'd be mad to try parking up when you can sit and relax on the bus.

A Victorian inspired market is making its way to Matlock...

This year, the Victorian Christmas market descends on Matlock on the 30th of November until the 2nd of December, bringing with it around 200 stalls and a large array of other activities such as Santa’s Grotto, the much anticipated light switch-on and even a fireworks display!  Allow us to get you there in style on board one of our X17 Gold buses from Sheffield or Chesterfield as we reckon a glass of authentic mulled wine is well worth a ride on the bus – especially when free wifi is involved!

Whether you’re a seasoned Christmas market goer, or thinking of braving the winter chill on the hunt for some special gift ideas for the first time this year, be sure to visit our website, to plan your journey and find out the cost of your ticket in advance. If you want to make it a day out for the family, our Family Explorer ticket (covering up to two adults and three children) will set you back just £11 and is valid for travel on our buses in the whole of South and West Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
