You had your say – your new service X2

The consultation we held in January gave us lots of feedback to help shape service 2 to better meet your travel needs.

Service 2 will become the X2, which will offer new connections to Hoyland and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

We suggested making parts of the route limited stop to speed up journeys, and with the majority of responses being in favour of this, that’s exactly what we’re doing! The X2 will run Monday to Saturday mornings and daytime and will be limited stop between Barnsley and Birdwell as well as Chapeltown and Sheffield. Service 2 will continue to operate in the evenings and all day Sunday, serving all stops.

We also asked whether you would prefer the service to no longer serve Worsbrough Village to make the route faster and more direct. Just over half (52%) of the feedback wanted us to keep serving Worsbrough Village, and as we had lots of feedback letting us know how important the link to Sheffield is for residents, both the 2 and X2 will continue to serve all stops.

To improve connections to Sheffield for residents of Hoyland and Elsecar, we suggested two routes which the service could take through Hoyland. Option 1 was chosen with 66% of votes, which means that both the 2 and X2 will run via West Street, King Street, Millhouses Street and then Milton Road/Broadcarr Road. (add map)

New options for the route through Sheffield city centre were also proposed, with option 1 being the favourite.

The new route through Sheffield will run via Furnival Gate, Arundel Gate and then up alongside Peace Gardens before turning onto West Street and then direct to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The return journey to Barnsley will run via Leopold Street and Pinstone Street.
We also asked whether you would prefer the service to pick up and drop off within the grounds of the Northern General Hospital. It was another close vote with 53% of the feedback in favour of this.

Concerns were raised about the congestion inside the hospital grounds, and so the decision has been made that service X2 will stop outside the hospital on Barnsley Road, whilst the 2 service will serve the Clock Tower stop within the grounds on evenings and Sundays.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation – your feedback helps shape your local bus services.
