Tour of Britain 6-7 September

Tour of Britain is coming to Cumbria on 6 & 7 September.

Cumbria is hosting two stages of the Tour of Britain cycle race which will take place across parts of Cumbria.

  • 6th September Stage Five: Starts at Cockermouth & Finished in Whinlatter
  • 7th September Stage Six: Starts at Barrow in Furness & Finished at Whinlatter Pass


We have worked hard to ensure minimal disruption to your journey as a result of the race, but some services will be affected for parts of 6 and 7 September.

Central Lakes

On  Friday 7th September, the OVO Energy Tour of Britain cycle race passes through the Central Lakes region. Traffic will be controlled by a rolling road block in front of the race.  This will affect Services 505, 516, 555 & 599 to varying degrees.

 

Service 505

Windermere - Coniston 

  • The 1130 from Windermere will operate a direct route between Ambleside and Coniston and will not serve stops between Clappersgate and Coniston Waterhead.
  • The 1230 from Windermere will operate the full route but may be delayed

Coniston – Windermere

  • The 1128 from Coniston will operate a direct route between Coniston and Ambleside and will not serve stops between Coniston Waterhead and Clappersgate.
  • The 1228 from Coniston will operate the full route but may be delayed.

  • No cancellations but the 1230 Ambleside – Dungeon Ghyll and subsequent 1305 Dungeon Ghyll – Ambleside services may be delayed.

Service 555

 

Kendal - Keswick

 

  • The 1110 from Kendal will terminate at Ambleside Kelsick Road or Grasmere if the rolling road block is delayed by 5 minutes or more.
  • The 1140 from Kendal will terminate at Ambleside Waterhead Pier.
  • The 1210 from Kendal will operate the full route, but may be delayed between Ambleside and Keswick.

 

Keswick – Kendal

 

  • The 1230 from Keswick will operate a direct route to Kendal via the A66, M6 & A6. No stops will be served between Keswick Chestnut Hill and Kendal Bus Station.
  • The 1200 from Keswick will operate a direct route to Kendal via the A66, M6 & A6. No stops will be served between Keswick Chestnut Hill and Kendal Bus Station.
  • The 1300 from Keswick will START in Grasmere at 1330.
  • The 1330 from Keswick will START in Grasmere at 1400.
  • The 1400 from Keswick will operate the full route, but may be delayed.

Bowness – Grasmere

  • The 1122 from Bowness Braithwaite Fold will terminate at Ambleside Kelsick Road.
  • The 1142 & 1202 from Bowness Braithwaite Fold will terminate at Ambleside Waterhead Pier.
  • The 1222 from Bowness Braithwaite Fold will operate the full route, but may be delayed between Ambleside and Grasmere.

 

Grasmere – Bowness

  • The 1145 from Grasmere will operate the full route with the exception that it will NOT serve Ambleside Kelsick Road. 
  • The 1205 from Grasmere will START at Ambleside Waterhead Pier at 1226.
  • The 1225 from Grasmere will START at Ambleside Kelsick Road at 1243.
  • The 1245 from Grasmere will START at Ambleside Waterhead Pier at 1306.
  • The 1305 from Grasmere will operate the full route but may be delayed. Passengers will need to change buses at Ambleside.

 

All other routes in the Central Lakes area are unaffected. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this disruption to our services. Please see below for amended timetables for the affected routes.

West Cumbria

 

From 6pm Wednesday 5 September Cockermouth Main Street will be closed to traffic, Services X4/X5 will not use bus stops on Cockermouth Main Street, Castlegate Drive and Cockermouth School, services X4/X5 will operate via Sullart Street using bus stops outside the Sullart Street school. 

 

From 10am until 2:45pm on Thursday 6 September all services that operate through Cockermouth will use the Aldi Supermarket bus stop only; then will operate via Sullart Street using bus stops outside the Sullart Street school, until 5pm. 

 

On Friday 7th September, the OVO Energy Tour of Britain cycle race passes through the Keswick & Whinlatter. Traffic will be controlled by a rolling road block in front of the race. 

 

Please expect at least a 30min delays and possibly some cancellations to the following services;

 

  • Service X4 Keswick to Workington – service 14:45 service from Keswick
  • Service X5 Keswick to Penrith – service 13:10 service from Keswick
  • Service 600 Cockermouth to Carlisle – Service 14.45 from Cockermouth
  • Service 46/46A - Workington Harrington Circular - services between 13:40 - 14:33 will be affected.
  • Service 47 - Workington Seaton Circular Services between 13:40  - 14:33.
  • Service 50/51 - Workington Moorclose Circular between 13:40 - 14:33.
  • Service 30/31 - Workington – Maryport – Whitehaven between 13:40 and 14:33.
  • Service 300/302 - Workington – Whitehaven – Maryport – Carlisle Services between 13:40 and 14:33 

Barrow Services

As Barrow has the honor of being the starting point for stage seven, the town centre will be closed to vehicle traffic on the 7th September. This means all of the Town Centre bus stops will be closed between 5.00am - 2.00 pm. The closed area will be between Duke Street from Ransden Square to Scheider Square and there will be no access via Cornwallis Street and Market Street from Hindpool Road.

 

‘Stagecoach Helpers’ will be on hand to assist passengers with any queries.  They will be located in the Town Centre near the existing bus stops, outside Alfred Barrow School, the Job Centre, Ramsden Square and Ulverston Victoria Road.  They will be identifiable by their Stagecoach Hi Visibility Vest with ‘Stagecoach, Happy to Help’ on the back.

 

Service 1
Towards Hawcoat and Furness General Hospital
You may use the bus stop outside the Job Centre on Michaelson Rd, or the bus stop in Ramsden Square turning circle.
 
Towards Barrow Island and Walney, 
You may use the bus stop opposite Job Centre, or the normal bus stop on Abbey Road just before Ramsden Square roundabout
 
Services 2 & 5 
Barrow Town Hall- Tesco – West Scale - Northscale
Will operate normal routes until traffic lights at B&Q where it will turn left then straight to the Tesco Bus Stop.  Passengers for the Town Centre can alight at B&Q
 
Service 3 
Towards Ormsgill
use bus stop opposite Alfred Barrow School just before The Albion, or second bus stop in Ramsden Square turning circle
 
Towards Barrow Island and Walney
use bus stop at Alfred Barrow School, or the normal bus stop on Abbey Road just before Ramsden Square roundabout
 
Services 4
Towards Asda
use bus stop at Alfred Barrow School, or normal bus stop at Tesco.
 
Towards Holbeck
use normal bus stop at Tesco, or bus stop opposite Alfred Barrow School just before The Albion.
 
Service 6/X6
 
Barrow – Ulverston  -  Croftlands - Kendal
All services will start/terminate at the normal bus stop in Ramsden Square turning circle
 
Service 7
Barrow – Askam – Kirkby – Broughton – Millom
The morning journey will stop opposite the Job Centre on Michaelson Rd, before operating to Furness College via Michaelson Rd and Ferry Road.
 
 
The Cyclists are expected to leave Barrow Town Hall at 11.00 am, there will be rolling roadblocks following the route of the race that will cause a short delay to all of our services out of Barrow. 
 
The A590 will be closed at Ulverston for approximately 30 minutes in order to allow the cyclists to cross from the Coast Road continuing through Ulverston to Broughton Beck then Lowick.  It is expected that all journeys into/out of Ulverston will be between approximately 11.30 and 12.30.
