Changes to fares and tickets in East Sussex

Changes to fares and tickets in East Sussex from 1st January 2025

From Wednesday 1st January there will be changes to bus fares and tickets in East Sussex.

Stagecoach and East Sussex County Council have worked together to reduce bus fares for communities in East Sussex. From 1st January, until at least the end of March 2025, reductions will apply to most single bus fares, which means East Sussex will have some of the lowest single bus fares in the country.

From the same date, the Government has announced there will be a new £3 single fare cap in England. This means you’ll never pay more than £3 for a single ride, no matter how far you travel.*

Also from 1st January, return tickets will no longer be available, but in most cases, two single tickets will offer the best value if you’re making a return trip, or a DayRider ticket will give you great value unlimited travel for the whole day.

East Sussex County Council will continue to support low-cost bus fares for children with great value single fares, a 50p accompanied child ticket, and an off-peak £1 single for the under 19s.

DayRider and MegaRider ticket prices will increase, but local DayRider tickets will be restored at Hastings and Eastbourne. East Sussex DayRider tickets will continue to be available for unlimited travel around the county, supported by East Sussex County Council, for adults, young people under 30 years, and under 19s.

A Family DayRider will be replaced with a new Group DayRider ticket, offering great value for up to five people travelling together.

Weekly point-to-point tickets will no longer be available on Stagecoach buses.

Single tickets

Single tickets will be capped at a maximum of £3 as part of the Government’s national bus fare cap scheme.

Single fares lower than £3 will be reduced thanks to support from East Sussex County Council with funding from the East Sussex Bus Service Improvement Plan. That means, for adults, a short-hop journey will be just £1.00, a medium-length journey will be £2.00, and longer-distance single journeys will be capped at £3 no matter how far you travel.*

Child single tickets will be available from just 50p for a short hop, then £1.00, £1.50, £2.00, £2.50 through to no more than £3 for longer-distance journeys.

*The Government £3 fare cap scheme is expected to last until 31 December 2025.

Single U19 tickets

This great value £1 off-peak single ticket for unaccompanied young people (aged up to 18 years) will continue to be available thanks to ongoing support from East Sussex County Council.

This ticket is only available from 6pm on Mondays to Fridays, and all day at weekends and during school holidays.

Child tickets accompanied

Up to four young people can take a single ride for 50p each when accompanied by an adult with a valid adult ticket or concession pass. This offer is supported by East Sussex County Council for children and young people aged 5 to 18 years.

Return tickets

Return tickets will no longer be available.

In most cases, two single tickets will offer the best value if you’re making a return trip. Or a DayRider ticket will give you great value unlimited travel for the whole day - please see below.

Child return tickets

Child returns will no longer be available, but buying a child single ticket each way may offer the best value option for a return trip.

Alternatively, you can get an East Sussex DayRider U19 that gives unlimited travel for just £3.75 anywhere in East Sussex. If you’re travelling after 6pm in the evening or anytime at weekends or during school holidays, you can get a £1 U19 single ticket.

DayRider

DayRider tickets will increase in price, but we’re restoring local adult DayRider tickets for Hastings and Eastbourne. East Sussex County Council will continue to help keep prices as low as possible for travel anywhere around the county by supporting East Sussex DayRider tickets for adults, the under 30s, and young people under the age of 19.

Hastings DayRider will cost £6.00

Eastbourne & Hailsham DayRider will cost £6.00

East Sussex DayRider (above age 29) will cost £6.10

Flexi tickets are bundles of 5 or 10 DayRider tickets. Flexi5 gives you 5 local DayRider tickets for the price of 4. Flexi10 is 10 local DayRider tickets for the price of 7.

From 1st January, East Sussex Flexi tickets will no longer be available, but you will be able to get local Hastings or Eastbourne Flexi tickets. A Flexi5 DayRider bundle works out at £4.80 per day for unlimited travel in a local zone, and a Flexi10 bundle at just £4.10 per day. South East regional Flexi bundles are available too.

These tickets will offer a great value option if 3 or more people are travelling together, compared to buying individual DayRider tickets.

EveningRider tickets

The South East EveningRider is valid for unlimited travel anywhere on the Stagecoach South East bus network after 6pm until the last bus home. From 1st January the price will be £4.50.

NEW for 2025 – A South East Group EveningRider ticket will be available for groups of up to 5 people of any age, travelling together. At £12.00 this ticket offers exceptional value if 3 or more people are travelling together, compared to buying individual EveningRider tickets.

Weekly point-to-point tickets

Some bus routes in East Sussex have weekly ‘point-to-point’ tickets. These legacy tickets are no longer supported and will be withdrawn.

In most cases the reduced single fares, supported by East Sussex County Council, will offer the best value option for regular travel on these services. Alternatively, an East Sussex DayRider U30 or U19 ticket may offer a better value choice.

7 day MegaRider

MegaRider tickets will increase in price.

A local zone 7 Day MegaRider will cost £23.40

A South East regional 7 Day MegaRider will cost £37.00

A MegaRider ticket will still offer great value for regular travel. With unlimited use on any Stagecoach bus in your area for 7 days in a row - the more you travel, the more you save!

A South East regional 28 Day MegaRider will cost £125.80

28 Day MegaRider tickets offer great savings for regular travel. Even if you’re only using the bus 5 days per week, you can save at least 33% compared to buying DayRiders.

MegaRider Xtra

MegaRider Xtra tickets will also increase in price. However, for existing customers this price increase won’t take effect until 31 January 2025.

A local zone MegaRider Xtra will cost £73.10

A South East regional MegaRider Xtra will cost £118.90

MegaRider Xtra lets you set-up automatic monthly payments to give you non-stop unlimited travel on all our buses, either in a local zone or across the South East.

FAQS

Why are you removing return tickets?

Removing return tickets will simplify our ticket offering and provide more flexibility for you to choose the best value option for your travel requirements. With single fares reduced to some of the lowest levels in the country (thanks to support from the Government and East Sussex County Council), buying a single ticket each time you travel will in most cases be the lowest-cost option.

You can also consider if a DayRider might be a more suitable option for one day’s unlimited travel. We also offer bundles of local or South East DayRider tickets on our app, called Flexi tickets, which offer even better value and can be used whenever you want.

My child buys a child return ticket, why are you removing child returns?

Most children in East Sussex are eligible for the County Council’s weekly Freedom ticket which offers the very best value option for children in school uniform or who carry a free 3-iD card. But we recognise that removing return tickets will affect some families where children currently buy a return ticket whenever they travel by bus.

With support from East Sussex County Council, there’s a great value range of child single tickets starting from just 50p through to a maximum of £3. In many cases buying a child single ticket for each leg of the journey will be the best value option. But there’s also the East Sussex DayRider U19 ticket for children and young people up to the age of 18 years. This ticket gives unlimited travel for one day at just £3.75 anywhere around East Sussex. The East Sussex DayRider U19 is available on the bus from the driver, or on the Stagecoach Bus App.

Why are you increasing the cost of East Sussex DayRider tickets?

East Sussex DayRider tickets are supported by East Sussex County Council who subsidise the tickets with funds from the East Sussex Bus Service Improvement Plan. This ensures the price for bus users is kept as low as possible. Unfortunately the cost of operating bus services has risen by over 26% since the tickets were introduced in 2022. Therefore, to ensure there is enough funding to keep the tickets at a reduced-price level for as long as possible, East Sussex County Council has taken the decision to apply a modest increase in the price.

Why are you increasing the cost of MegaRider tickets?

During the period since 2022 when the Government first introduced the £2 national single fare cap, we’ve held our DayRider and MegaRider prices as low as possible to ensure they continue to offer good value for frequent bus travel compared to buying single fares. These increases are necessary to rebalance our prices across the range of ticket options available and help recover our operating costs which have risen by over 26% during the same period.

Why are you removing the weekly point-to-point ticket?

Unfortunately we’re no longer able carry the cost of providing this unsupported legacy ticket. In most cases the reduced single fares, supported by East Sussex County Council, will offer the best value option for regular travel on services where this ticket was available. Alternatively, an East Sussex DayRider U30 or U19 ticket may be a better choice.
