Have your say - 217 and 218 Kilnhurst Consultation

We are proposing to make some changes to buses 217 and 218 from 2 September 2018.

The 217 and 218 buses are carrying less customers due to changes in society and personal lifestyles. People are travelling less – this is due to a number of reasons, including the continued growth in internet shopping and more flexible working arrangements such as working from home some of the time.

To ensure the long term sustainability of your local bus network, we need to make some changes. However we are also keen to make sure your buses still take you where you need to go and so we want to hear from you about what you think.

The proposals

Service 217 would stop running. Unfortunately this will leave Lime Grove without a bus service but the numbers using the bus on this short section of route are very low and the service doesn’t cover its costs of operation. From Lime Grove the distance to a bus stop is relatively short and only two bus stops will no longer be served.

Service 218 would continue to run every half hour. The timetable would be amended to improve punctuality and make the service more reliable.

We are proposing to stop calling in to Swinton rail station, instead stopping at the nearest bus stops on Station Road and Station Street. This is to save time and to provide a more direct journey.

We could route one bus an hour between Highthorn Road and Rawmarsh to serve Wentworth Road, Celandine Rise, Wentworth Road and Warren Vale. This would provide a more direct link for people travelling to and from Rawmarsh, Parkgate and Rotherham. It would also provide an hourly bus service during Monday to Saturday daytimes for the Celandine Rise area. If we did do this, we would number this route 218a. The existing 106 service which runs twice a day will no longer be required. The other existing 218 bus would continue as normal unchanged.

We are also looking to serve the new housing on Carlisle Street. This would be served by running down Carlisle Street to the turning point at the end and returning the same way to continue its route. It would provide an hourly daytime bus service six days a week for the first time for this area. This could be either the 218 or the 218a.
