Holymoorside bus sevices consultation

Recent changes to Stagecoach bus service in Holymoorside

Since changes introduced on service 80 and 91, we have received a number of comments and feedback from customers in the Holymoorside area. We have also been in contact with Lee Rowley MP, Toby Perkins MP and Councillor Martin Thacker and we understand that there are concerns about the loss of the direct service from Holymoorside through to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and that the new timetable does not cater for children attending Brookfield School.

From 28 January 2018, service 80 (Holymoorside - Chesterfield - Royal Hospital - Brimington) was replaced between Holymoorside and Chesterfield by new service 91.

Unfortunately it is not possible for us to reinstate the service as it was. We will, however consider adjusting some journeys to better suit customers travelling to and from the school and will also explore whether occasional buses can be provided so that customers can stay on the bus to travel through to the Royal Hospital.

We want to make sure that the service works as best it can for local residents and we would like to ask for your comments and feedback on the questionnaire attached to help us assess the needs of our customers.

Why did service 80 change in January?

The reasons for the change to the service are summarised below:

  • Increasing levels of traffic and congestion on the route meant that the buses were unable to keep to their timetables. Splitting the route eases this pressure and allows us to operate a more reliable service.
  • To retain the old route and give each bus extra time to complete its journey (due to the increased traffic) would mean adding an additional bus into the route – the cost of operating this bus and the driver to drive the vehicle would mean that the route would become unsustainable and we could not continue to run it long term.
  • We used our on bus ticket data to research how customers were using the 80 service and found that very few people each day travel directly from Holymoorside to the Royal Hospital and even fewer made the return journey. The majority of customers were travelling into Chesterfield from both Holymoorside and the return journey from the Hospital.
  • Less customers travel on the Holymoorside - Chesterfield section than the Chesterfield - Hospital - Brimington section or the previous route. Therefore the best solution to allow us to continue serving customers was to split the service into two sections, with the less used Holymoorside - Chesterfield section operating every 45 minutes instead of every 30 minutes, to better suit the number of people using the buses.
  • By splitting the route into two halves, we are making better use of the same number of buses. So the whole route on the 80 and 91 services has the same amount of investment as it did previously, but the buses are now more reliable.
  • The replacement 91 service for Holymoorside operates with its own dedicated bus all day with enough time in Chesterfield in between each journey to allow it to keep to time and not be affected by traffic congestion from the other side of town. We believe that a reliable bus service operating every 45 minutes is better than the previously unreliable bus service every 30 minutes.

Where do I change buses in Chesterfield town centre to travel to and from the Royal Hospital now and what number bus do I catch?

Buses on service 91 stop outside the Portland Hotel on New Beetwell Street. Leave the bus here if you are travelling to the Royal Hospital.

Service 80 leaves from Stand B5 on New Beetwell Street, every 30 minutes generally at 20 and 50 minutes past each hour, however please check the timetable if you are travelling at peak times as some buses operate slightly earlier or later due to traffic conditions at these times.

The most frequent buses towards the Royal Hospital leave from Stephenson Place Stand K2 with six buses per hour on services 80, 82 and 83. These buses generally leave at 5, 20, 25, 35, 50 and 55 past each hour but again please check the timetable if you are travelling at peak times as some buses operate slightly earlier or later due to traffic conditions at these times.

Return from the hospital up to six times per hour on services 80, 82 and 83. The 91 to Holymoorside leaves from Stand B11 on New Beetwell Street.
