The valley of the River Dee is known as Royal Deeside for its connections with Queen Victoria and her descendants. The Royal residence of Balmoral Castle sits in the heart of the valley and is still a favoured home to Her Majesty the Queen.
The area attracts thousands of visitors every year who flock to enjoy the spectacular scenery and varied setting, from the mountains of the Cairngorms in the west to the rolling farmland towards Aberdeen.
While in Deeside, visitors can visit the splendor of the Royal residence of Balmoral Castle, which is situated near Crathie. The castle has been one of the residences of the British Royal Family since 1852, when Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert first purchased it and to this day, it remains the private property of the monarch. Between April and July the gardens of the castle are open to the public.
Or visit the town of Banchory, which has much to offer visitors, with two famous castles nearby – Crathes and Drum, a wealth of local shops and historical churches. On top of this, at the nearby Bridge of Feugh, there is a chance to see salmon leaping and enjoy some of the rich Deeside surroundings.
