  • Residents encouraged to keep an eye out as the mystery feline continues its tour of the Lang Toun

A giant cat has been spotted travelling by bus through Kirkcaldy as part of the much-talked-about Wemyss Ware® Cat Trail.

Sweetie, the distinctive Tunnock's Tea Cake-inspired sculpture and the trail's elusive mystery cat, has left its previous home at Philp Hall and arrived at Dean Park Hotel after making the journey on a Stagecoach bus.

The cat trail has 17 sculptures each decorated by different Fife-based artists. Sweetie was decorated by well-known artist Robert Mach, who is best known for his confectionary inspired artworks.

While the trail's other 16 sculptures have settled into locations across the area, Sweetie has taken a different approach. The giant feline will continue to pop up at various locations throughout the coming weeks and months, giving residents and visitors an extra challenge as they explore the trail.

The large-scale sculpture surprised guests and staff after arriving at Dean Park Hotel on Tuesday morning and is expected to remain there for around a week before moving on once again.

The Wemyss Ware® Cat Trail is run by the Adam Smith Global Foundation and supported by The Kirkcaldy Lottery. It is transforming the Lang Toun with a series of colourful cat sculptures inspired by Kirkcaldy's famous ceramic heritage. The trail celebrates local creativity, showcases the work of talented artists and aims to attract visitors from across Fife and beyond.

Fiona Doherty, Managing Director of Stagecoach South Scotland, said:

"We were delighted to give Sweetie a lift to its latest destination and help bring a little extra fun to the Wemyss Ware® Cat Trail.

"The trail has captured imaginations across Kirkcaldy and beyond, and Sweetie's mystery tour is adding another exciting dimension for residents and visitors. We would encourage people to keep their eyes peeled when they're out and about because you never know where this giant feline might appear next.

"Our bus network makes it easy for people to explore the trail and discover all the fantastic sculptures across the area, while enjoying a great day out in the Lang Toun.”

Dr Gordon Povey, Chief Executive of the Adam Smith Global Foundation said: “The cat trail launched a month ago and the reaction has been phenomenal with thousands of visitors coming from all over Scotland to visit our new friends.

“It is great that Sweetie now has a bus pass and will be on tour over the summer months. This will add another fun element to the trail, with the Dean Park Hotel just one of many stops. Our cat hunters will now need to try and find out where Sweetie has taken the bus to tick them all off.”

Kirkcaldy folk are being encouraged to follow the trail, support local businesses and keep watch for Sweetie's next appearance as the giant cat continues its adventures across the town.
