- Fife-based Stagecoach bus driver Ryan Campbell has won The McAlpine, the Scottish Mid-Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, at Blairgowrie.
- The former professional represented Scotland alongside a teenage Bob MacIntyre before competing on the PGA EuroPro Tour against players who have since reached the highest levels of professional golf.
- Now a Stagecoach driver and traffic office super spare, Ryan has rediscovered his love of golf after a two-year break from playing.
A former professional golfer who once competed against some of the biggest names in the game has enjoyed a remarkable return to the fairways after swapping his driver for the steering wheel of a Stagecoach bus.
Ryan Campbell, 34, who lives in Colinsburgh, Fife, claimed victory in The McAlpine, the Scottish Mid-Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, staged at Blairgowrie in memory of Kevin McAlpine.
Originally from Falkirk, Ryan's golfing career saw him represent Scotland in the 2015 Home Internationals alongside a teenage Bob MacIntyre, now one of the leading names in world golf, before competing in the South American Amateur Championship in Lima, Peru, in 2016, shortly before turning professional.
He subsequently competed on the PGA EuroPro Tour, where his contemporaries included Marco Penge and Dan Brown, who have progressed to the PGA Tour, and regularly played alongside former Open Champion Paul Lawrie on the Tartan Pro Tour.
Ryan enjoyed his most successful professional season in 2019, recording five top-five finishes, before fulfilling a lifelong ambition by competing in a DP World Tour event in Ireland in 2021.
Having stopped playing full-time in 2022, Ryan subsequently worked in golf tourism and as a coach before joining Stagecoach in February 2025.
After taking a complete break from playing for around two years, he rediscovered his enthusiasm for the game this summer, returning to competition as an amateur while balancing golf with his career at Stagecoach South Scotland.
Ryan initially spent several months as a driver mentor before recently moving into the traffic office as a super spare.
His Stagecoach career also brings him into St Andrews, where he drives customers past the iconic Home of Golf signs and drops visitors at Grannie Clark’s Wynd, less than 100 yards from the 18th green of the Old Course.
Ryan said: “I joined Stagecoach in February 2025 after leaving the golf industry. I stopped playing full-time in 2022 and worked for a tour operator and as a golf coach before making the move.
“Believe it or not, I stopped playing golf altogether for about two years. Even when I was working in golf and coaching, I wasn't playing myself.
“I only started playing again this summer, and it's purely a hobby now. I play on my days off or occasionally if I'm on a backshift, I'll play before work.
“Winning The McAlpine was a fantastic feeling, particularly after having such a long break from playing.
“Representing Scotland was a huge highlight, especially playing in the Home Internationals alongside Bob MacIntyre in 2015 and then competing in the South American Amateur in Peru the following year.
“My career highlight would probably be playing in a DP World Tour event in Ireland in 2021. That was a dream come true. I also had a great year in 2019, with five top-five finishes on the EuroPro Tour.
“Since joining Stagecoach, I've really enjoyed the opportunity to develop, first as a driver mentor and now working in the traffic office. It's great to have that balance between work and getting back out on the golf course.”
Fiona Doherty, Managing Director of Stagecoach South Scotland, said: “Ryan's story is a fantastic example of the talent, experience and ambition within our team.
“From representing Scotland alongside a young Bob MacIntyre to competing professionally and now winning a national amateur championship, Ryan has enjoyed an exceptional golfing journey. We're delighted that he's rediscovered his passion for the game and achieved such a special success.
“Since joining Stagecoach, Ryan has also made a valuable contribution to our operation, supporting fellow drivers as a mentor before progressing into our traffic office team.
“It's wonderful to see him combining his career with us alongside his sporting ambitions, particularly when his work takes him into St Andrews, the Home of Golf.
“Everyone at Stagecoach South Scotland is incredibly proud of Ryan. Congratulations
on a brilliant achievement.”
