Driver's decade of coastal journeys as Thanet Open Topper bus turns 10

Stagecoach’s popular Thanet Open Topper bus is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer, with one of its longest-serving drivers reflecting on a decade of helping passengers discover the area’s stunning coastline. 

Stuart Draper, who has been based at Stagecoach’s Thanet depot since joining the company in 2003, has been one of the key drivers of the open-top service since it returned in 2016. 

Having driven the route for much of its history, Stuart has seen first-hand how it has grown from a small seasonal service into one of Thanet’s most recognisable attractions. 

“I love the route and I love the area I live in. It’s a great way to see the towns we have around here,” said Stuart. “Being one of the drivers who has been driving the open-top bus over these 10 years, it feels like it’s my anniversary as well as the bus’s.” 

When the service returned in 2016, it initially operated between Ramsgate Boating Pool and Stone Bay in Broadstairs. Since then, the route has expanded to showcase even more of the coastline, now connecting destinations including Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate, Westgate and Minnis Bay. 

Stuart said: “There are so many special places along the route, from Ramsgate Royal Harbour and the tunnels, to Broadstairs’ links with Charles Dickens, Margate Sands and the coastline around to Minnis Bay. 

“Thanet has such a beautiful coastline, and the open-top bus gives people the best view of it. It’s fantastic seeing customers get on with a smile and enjoy the experience, whether they’re visitors exploring the area or local families making memories.” 

The service has become a firm favourite with customers of all ages, with the open-top experience offering a unique way to take in the sights, sounds and scenery of the Thanet coast. 

The 10th anniversary season continues throughout the summer, with the Thanet Open Top bus running daily until 31 August, followed by weekend services on 5 and 6 September. 

Customers can enjoy a hop-on, hop-off journey around the coast with day tickets available for individuals, groups and concession customers. Tickets are also valid on local Stagecoach services within the Thanet DayRider zone.
