New on-board technology is being installed across our Portsmouth bus fleet, announcing upcoming bus stops and train departure times, as well as places of interest along the route.
Linked to GPS, the new audio-visual announcements will make public transport more accessible for bus users across Portsmouth, Havant and South East Hampshire.
The new system will also have the capability to update the destination screens on the front of the bus throughout the journey. This feature will remove locations once they have been passed.
Marc Reddy, Managing Director for Stagecoach South said: ‘We want to ensure that every customer can travel with us and do so with confidence".
“For passengers with accessibility needs, the announcements make it easier to follow the progress of their journey, while reassuring them they’re getting off at the right stop. Visitors to the region, and even locals new to using buses will also benefit, and it makes public transport a more attractive travel option".
The scheme is being introduced in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, as part of the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan.
Cllr Peter Candlish Cabinet Member for Transport at Portsmouth City Council said: "We want everyone to feel confident when taking the bus. This new technology, with audio-visual announcements, supports our vision for improving buses in Portsmouth by making public transport more accessible and giving passengers greater independence.”
Radio presenter, Rick Jackson, provides the voice on the systems announcements. Many local customers will be familiar with Ricks' voice as the breakfast show host at Greatest Hits Radio.
Rick Jackson said: “It’s an honour to be the voice of Stagecoach buses in Portsmouth. As a regular bus user for many years in the city, it will be nice to hear a familiar voice announce the next stop - even if it is mine!”
