Stagecoach South Driver Edyta Kozlowska Praised for Heroic Act

At Stagecoach South, our drivers do more than just get passengers safely from A to B—they’re often the eyes, ears, and hearts of the communities they serve. One recent example that’s captured the attention of colleagues and the wider public is the swift and selfless actions of Winchester-based driver, Edyta Kozlowska.

Edyta Kozlowska

While out on her usual route, Edyta spotted a young child—just three years old—alone near a bridge, dangerously close to moving traffic. The boy was running from the pavement into the road and back again, with no guardian in sight. Despite other vehicles passing by, it was Edyta who took action.

Bringing her bus to a safe stop, Edyta kept calm under pressure. A concerned passenger also stepped in, helping bring the child onto the bus, where Edyta made sure he was safe and reassured. She immediately contacted the police and our Winchester depot, then thoughtfully arranged for her passengers to board the next bus behind, keeping their journeys moving with minimal delay.

When police arrived, it was confirmed the child had been reported missing by his parents earlier that morning.

“Nobody else had stopped,” Edyta said. “I just kept thinking—what if he ran into the road or towards the tracks? I have three boys of my own, and I could only imagine how his parents were feeling. I was just happy I could help.”

Edyta has been with Stagecoach South for five months and has a year and a half of experience behind the wheel. Before that, she worked as a carer—roles that clearly reflect the natural compassion she brings to everything she does.

“If I see someone who needs help, I help,” she added. “It doesn’t matter if they’re three or 80. You never know what someone’s going through—you just help.”

Operations Manager for Stagecoach South, Mark Jackson, praised Edyta’s response:

“Edyta showed incredible awareness and professionalism. Her quick thinking helped ensure the child was safe and reunited with his family. She also looked after our passengers, kept them informed, and handled a difficult situation with calm and care. We’re incredibly proud to have her on our team.”

Edyta’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact our drivers can have each day—not just as transport professionals, but as everyday heroes looking out for the people around them.
