Bus Driver apprenticeships at Stagecoach

13 Feb 2025

National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the dedication, achievements, and transformative journeys of individuals who have taken the apprenticeship route to build fulfilling careers. At Stagecoach Worthing Depot, we take immense pride in our bus driver apprenticeship program, which has provided many with the opportunity to develop their skills, gain qualifications, and embark on rewarding careers in the transport industry.

Mark Gretton (Bus Driver) and Nathan Beer (Training Champion)

Having spent 12 years working in a printing firm and persevering through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mark Gretton found himself at a crossroads. Looking for a fresh start and a role that aligned with his aspirations, he came across an advertisement for an Apprentice Bus Driver position at Stagecoach.

“I had a desire to be a bus driver,” Mark recalls.

Without formal qualifications upon leaving education, Mark saw the apprenticeship program as a gateway to gaining essential skills and certifications. Through the scheme, he successfully attained his O-levels in Maths and English—accomplishments he now holds with immense pride.

Mark's journey as an apprentice in his 50s caught the attention of local news, highlighting his inspiring story of career transformation and perseverance. Now a fully qualified bus driver, Mark hasn’t looked back and is enjoying his new career, proving that it’s never too late to make a change.

Like Mark, Nathan Beer also sought a career shift. Originally working as a plasterer, Nathan always had a passion for driving. When he transitioned into the bus industry, he quickly developed a love for his new profession and a desire to support others on their journey.

“I’ve always wanted to drive, and I’ve fallen in love with the industry ever since,” Nathan shares. “I’ve always wanted to give back.”

Having been mentor to new apprentices, Nathan finds great joy in watching them grow in confidence and skill. He describes the moment they complete their training as a deeply rewarding experience.

“They’re over the moon,” he says proudly.

Now a Training Champion at Worthing Depot, Nathan continues to guide and inspire new apprentices, playing a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of bus drivers. His dedication to the industry and his passion for mentoring make him an invaluable asset to the Stagecoach apprenticeship program.

Stories like Mark’s and Nathan’s highlight the life-changing impact of apprenticeships. At Stagecoach, we remain committed to providing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to gain new skills, develop their careers, and contribute to their communities.

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we recognise the hard work and dedication of all our apprentices and mentors who help make the program a success. If you’re considering a career change or know someone who is, an apprenticeship could be the perfect stepping stone toward a bright future.
