Meet Nil Kumar Nana: From Bus Driver to Full Fitter

Nil Kumar Nana is a valued engineer at our Aldershot depot, having successfully completed the Machelec Mechanical Electrician apprenticeship. He embarked on this journey in 2021 and, through dedication and hard work, became a full fitter upon completing the program in 2024.

Nil’s career with Stagecoach began in a very different role—behind the wheel as a bus driver. For 15 years, he diligently served passengers before deciding to take on a new challenge within the company. With a keen interest in mechanics and engineering, he saw the apprenticeship as an exciting opportunity to progress in his career.

“Stagecoach gave me opportunities to trade up, so I applied,” Nil recalls. “I was very, very enthusiastic.”

Nil’s background is deeply rooted in service and discipline. His father served in the British Army while Nil was growing up in Hong Kong, an experience that instilled in him a strong work ethic. When the opportunity arose to join Stagecoach, it was a significant and promising step for him and his family.

Throughout his apprenticeship, Nil received dedicated support from experienced mentors. His learning was complemented by structured college sessions, where he studied both theoretical and practical aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering. This combination of hands-on experience and academic knowledge helped him transition smoothly into his engineering role.

Now, as a full fitter, Nil is passionate about inspiring others to consider a career in engineering.
