Paul began his career on 10th February 1975, as a driver for Alder Valley at Hindhead. Throughout the years, he has witnessed remarkable changes in the transport industry, from driving Leyland Nationals and Bristol Lowliners with crash gearboxes and no power steering, to today’s modern electric buses.

During his time at Hindhead, Paul was promoted to Inspector and had the honour of driving the last bus out of the depot before its closure in 1994—an emotional moment for him, as he considered his colleagues there like family. Following this, Paul took on roles at Aldershot, Haslemere, and finally, Guildford Depot at Peasmarsh, where he has been a valued member of the team since 2015.

Beyond his regular duties, Paul has contributed to several prestigious events, including The Open Golf Championships in 2003, the 2012 Olympics, and PGA Wentworth Golf for six years. His commitment to the industry and enthusiasm for the job have made him a well-respected and admired member of the team.

Reflecting on his career, Paul said: “When I started 50 years ago, I never imagined I’d be driving electric buses—it just shows how much technology has progressed.”

Outside of work, Paul stays active through cycling, walking, and traveling in his camper van. He recently returned from a trip to Norfolk and enjoys spending time with his 10 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter, who keep him on his toes!

Stagecoach South, Operations Manager for Guildford, Graham Harmer praised Paul’s dedication: “Reaching 50 years of service is an outstanding achievement. Paul’s commitment, professionalism, and passion for the job are truly inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful for his contributions. He is a fantastic role model for us all.”

Stagecoach South is honoured to recognise Paul’s remarkable milestone and thanks him for his unwavering service over the past five decades.
