Accelerating Action in Engineering

06 Mar 2025

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Sara Shelley, a shining example of how women in engineering are breaking barriers and accelerating action in their careers.

Sara Shelley, Interim Assistant Engineering Manager

Sara joined Stagecoach in 2016 as an Engineering Apprentice on the Mechelec training course in Aldershot, drawn to the opportunity because it seemed "something quite interesting, so thought I’d give it a go." That curiosity and determination led her to complete the four-year program, securing a role as a Fitter at the Guildford depot in 2020.

Determined to continue progressing, Sara quickly advanced to Master Technician back in the Aldershot depot, a position she held for two years. In September 2023, she took another bold step forward, stepping into the role of Interim Assistant Engineering Manager—a testament to her dedication and drive.

Having accelerated action in her own career, she reflects, “I showed that I can do the job,” and believes that the same opportunities are available to everyone, not just women, as long as they are willing to work for it.

Working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Sara has found strong support from her colleagues and managers. She appreciates the camaraderie in her workplace, noting that “the guys I work with are always willing to lend a hand,” and that she has benefited from invaluable guidance from Engineering Managers throughout her career.

Looking ahead, Sara has her sights set on becoming an Engineering Manager. She also hopes to see more women applying for engineering roles, demonstrating that these opportunities are open to everyone.

This International Women’s Day, Sara’s story is a powerful reminder that with perseverance, passion, and a commitment to action, women can thrive in any field they choose.
