Bill McCartney re-joins Stagecoach Yorkshire as Operations Director

Stagecoach Yorkshire welcomed the return of one of their previous Graduate Trainees to lead the operations team as the company’s new Operations Director.

Bill McCartney, 37, started his career in public transport in Sheffield as part of the Stagecoach Yorkshire team in 2013 as a Graduate Trainee.

Since joining the company, he has worked his way through a number of operational roles in Stagecoach including Assistant Operations Manager in Oxford, Operations Manager in Peterborough, Swindon, and Cheltenham.

During his time at Swindon in 2020, despite a challenging industry climate, including the impact of COVID Bill oversaw growth in the network.

In addition to his extensive experience running several busy bus depots, he has also contributed to the introduction and staff training of a new payroll and people management system across the UK wide business.

From September 2021 until joining Stagecoach Yorkshire in September 2022, Bill played an integral role in co-ordinating the travel for a recent major international sporting event in Birmingham. Covering everything from; setting up new depots, recruiting large numbers of staff, scheduling and managing buses to carry athletes, event staff, media, police, and spectators to and from the various sporting venues and events.

Bill said: “I am delighted to be returning to Stagecoach Yorkshire where my public transport career began. Over the last few years the bus industry and its people have overcome some monumental challenges, and the immediate future will be no exception.  

“I already know the team at Stagecoach Yorkshire are talented, passionate and hardworking– I am excited to see how that passion can drive us forward and how our customers can benefit from all the potential that the team here has to offer.

“Coming back to Yorkshire feels like a sort of homecoming for me – although as a Scot, I don’t quite have the Yorkshire accent sussed yet!”
