Bus engineer celebrates outstanding 20 years of service

14 Sep 2026

A local bus engineer has been recognised for a magnificent 20 years of getting members of the public where they need to go, reliably.

Local bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire’s Nigel Cowen began working for the operator in 2006 and has been a respected colleague ever since. Jack Abbott, Engineering Director at Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “Nigel is a very important member of the team – someone who has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he is always happy to share around the group. He is very highly respected, so Engineering Manager Tim Booth, Assistance Engineering Manager, Andy Ellinsworth, and the team were keen to give him a little gift to recognise this landmark.

“He is an outstanding example of someone who really cares about his responsibility to help local people to get where they need to go, reliably.”

In 2006, in the UK, Prime Minister Tony Blair announced that he would resign by the end of the next year, and England lost to Portugal, on penalties, in the quarter-finals of the European Championships, under Sven-Göran Eriksson. Meanwhile, Richard Hammond, a presenter of Top Gear, suffered a serious injury in a jet-powered car crash while filming.

The big films of 2006 were Casino Royale, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Da Vinci Code, and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. The biggest selling songs in the UK were Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, A Moment Like This by Leona Lewis, Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira, I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ by The Scissor Sisters, and I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker by Sandi Thom.

Stagecoach runs an award-winning Engineering Apprenticeship scheme, which gives new Engineers the knowledge and skills they need for a robust career.
