Morlais Circular Walk
This is a fantastic walk where you can go back in time, you'll get to see the Morlais Castle which is 13th-century castle above the Taff Gorge. Although not much remains of the castle today you get to see the outline of what it looked like! This walk is about 6.3km with an elevation of 179m and it will take approx. 1.5hours to complete.
Attractions
As well as taking a leisurely walk, you can hop on the Brecon Mountain Railway which is open daily except Friday’s and during April and October. Travel from there through the Brecon Beacons National Park, Ponsticill, along the Taf Fechan Reservoir and up to Torpantau high in the Brecon Beanons. As well as that, along the circular walk you can stop by Pontsarn Viaduct which was built back in the 1860’s that was meant to carry the Brecon and Merthyr Railway over the river, some great photograph opportunities there!

- First bus from Merthyr Tydfil Bus Station towards Pant is 06:40am and you will arrive at approx. 06:54am.
- The last bus from the Hawthorns bus stop towards Merthyr Tydfil Bus Station is 19:16pm and you will arrive in the bus station at 19:32pm.
Service 35 timetable
Llwyn-Onn Reservoir
This is a beautiful woodland walk, you can enjoy the waterside trail which will take you along the forestry roads and paths. The views of the reservoir that was built in 1956 and covers 150 acres are breath-taking! The walk is about 3.4km with an elevation of 102m and it will take approx. 1 hours to complete.
Attractions
Stop off at the Garwnant Visitor Centre at the end of your walk, there’s plenty there for the family to do! You can have a picnic while the kids play in the park on site, you can also see what other walks are available if your keen to explore more another day.
How to get there
Service T4
The bus stop you will need is called - 'Forest Mountain Centre'.
Then you would need to walk to the Garwnant Visitor Centre which is about a 7-minute walk from the bus stop.
You can travel from Merthyr Tydfil or Brecon to get here.
- The first bus from Brecon is 06:25am which will get you to the bus stop needed at approx. 06:45am.
- The first bus from Merthyr is 06:00am which will get you to the bus stop at approx. 06:10am.
- The last bus from the Forest Mountain Centre bus stop towards Brecon is at approx. 19:45pm and you will arrive in Brecon at 20:00pm.
- The last bus from the Forest Mountain Centre bus stop towards Merthyr Tydfil is at approx. 22:40pm and you will arrive at Merthyr Tydfil at 22:50pm.
- The frequency of the T4 Service is every 2 hours
