Plymouth’s oldest hostelry, dating from 1540, and within easy walking distance of the city centre and the historic Barbican, attracts a varied clientele. A public house has stood on this site since the mid-19th century. The current building dates from the mid 1960’s after being blitzed in 1941. 4 Dolphin

A Plymouth institution, this unpretentious hostelry is steeped in history. Up to eight ales are all dispensed by gravity straight from the cask. Full of character, this charming pub has tiled floors, well-used wooden benches and a traditional open fire, all creating the perfect ambience. 5 Bread and Roses

This friendly, sympathetically restored, late Victorian pub is popular with university staff, but also has a mixed clientele. 6 Ship’s Tavern

This is a large pub situated in the Elburton area on the outskirts of Plymouth, serving up to three live beers. The Kings Head bar is the original building of what is now known as The Ships Tavern and was built sometime in the late 17th century. The building is an original Devon longhouse that was initially used as a farm, later being utilized as a scrumpy house with it’s own cider press. The Carvery is available from 1200–1500 (1900 on Sunday) and evening meals from 1700–2100 Monday to Friday, 2000 Saturdays. 7 Foxhound Inn

This 18th century former coaching house in a rural village just east of Plymouth, with two separate bars and a small restaurant. Traditional English meals are served daily, featuring locally sourced ingredients. Look out for Red Coat, an ale crafted by the landlord, among four guest ales. This is a two-bar village pub, which attracts locals and acts as a centre of the community. The public bar is lively, especially when football and rugby matches are screened, while the lounge is more relaxed, featuring a wood-burning stove and an area for dining. 9 Rose and Crown

Restaurant and pub at the east end of the village on the main A379 Plymouth – Kingsbridge Road. Now part of the St Austell pub estate, the two regular real ales are supplemented by another beer from the St Austell range. The pub has several distinct areas, including an upmarket restaurant. The village has an hourly bus service during the day to/from Plymouth/Kingsbridge (Stagecoach 3), which finishes in mid-evening. Country Bus 91 is daytime only. 10 Exeter Inn

The pub is situated at the bottom of the hill on the main A379. It is the oldest pub in the village, dating from the 14th century, with additions being added in the 19th century. It has been used as a coaching inn from Elizabethan times, and by Royalists during the Civil War. Food is served at both lunchtime (between 1200 - 1400 (1500 Sun) and evening (1830 - 2030, except there is no food on Wednesday or on Sunday evenings (roast available at lunchtime only)). A traditional 16th century English pub, a short walk from the village’s main thoroughfare, and is also now a free house. The multi-roomed interior features wood panelling, exposed beams and a more modern conservatory. There is a large beer garden with children’s play area to the rear. The three regular beers are supplemented by a fourth pump featuring a wide range of breweries, mostly in Devon and Cornwall. A Sunday night quiz is featured alongside a Friday Curry Night. 13 Fisherman’s Rest

Large village local, catering for the local community. Two ales are usually available, one sourced from Otter brewery, and may change from time to time. The walls are adorned with several prints from local artists. Pool and darts are played, and sporting events are shown on the big screen TV. 19 Cherub Inn

Situated in the nautical town of Dartmouth, a town famous for its medieval buildings, the Cherub is one of the best and the oldest, a Grade II listed 14th century former merchant’s house. The bar has many original features with beams made from old ships timbers which boasts six handpumps serving local and national cask ales. An intricate winding staircase leads to the cosy restaurant and facilities on the two upper floors.

20 Seven Stars

A Grade ll listed building with 16th and 17th-century features, that was originally two separate houses that were converted to form this pub in the mid 18th century. Whereby, it claims to be the towns oldest Ale House in Dartmouth. Recently re-opened after some refurbishment in Summer 2017.

There is an attractive ground floor that serves as a bar and restaurant. There is also an upstairs restaurant which is offered as a function room.

21 Green Dragon

Opposite the village church, on the South West Coastal Path and half a mile from Blackpool Sands, there has been a building on the site since the 12th Century. The cosy bar, a focus for the village, features a large log burning open fire. The bar, adjacent restaurant and kitchen were refurbished in 2018. The background music is subdued, there are no gaming machines or TV screens, except for Six Nations rugby. Local legend suggests there is a tunnel underneath the floor to the nearby beach and, some say, a ghost.

22 Kings Arms

A two level grade II listed pub, with roomy bar on road side with wooden floors. Steps to half floor lead to a balcony with lovely views over the sea and large garden with seating. Good sea views from the garden and handy for the South West Coast Path.

Reopened, as a free house on 16th October 2020 following a long closure. It is now a community pub run by the village. New children’s play area completed in early 2021

23 Start Bay Inn

The inn dates back to the 14th century, when it was known as the Fisherman's Arms. Family run for 40 years, it is in a fantastic setting between Slapton Ley and the beach and renowned for its extensive fresh fish menu. Outside seating area with great sea views. 24 Church House Inn

Attractive pub/restaurant in the middle of the village, adjacent to the village church and close to the bus route. The current landlady took over in October 2018. It was completely refurbished and reopened in May 2019 with a new layout featuring Oak floors and furniture. The pub is adjacent to the village community field which has a children's play area. Meal times may vary in winter. The Church House Inn is a sister pub to the Cricket Inn in nearby Beesands.
