2 Minerva Inn

Plymouth’s oldest hostelry, dating from 1540, and within easy walking distance of the city centre and the historic Barbican, attracts a varied clientele. It has a long and narrow bar, leading through to a cosy seating area at the rear. Two guest beers are supplemented by spring and autumn beer festivals, where beer could and does, come from all over the country. 3 Queens Arms

A public house has stood on this site since the mid-19th century. The current building dates from the mid 1960’s after being blitzed in 1941. It is a traditional pub set in Southside Street which tends to attract older customers. Up to four live beers are usually available. 4 Dolphin

A Plymouth institution, this unpretentious hostelry is steeped in history. Up to eight ales are all dispensed by gravity straight from the cask. Full of character, this charming pub has tiled floors, well-used wooden benches and a traditional open fire, all creating the perfect ambience. 5 Bread and Roses

This friendly, sympathetically restored, late Victorian pub is popular with university staff, but also has a mixed clientele. Up to three live beers are sold which are organic/Fairtrade wherever possible, just like the snacks. The ales are selected from local and regional breweries, including small batch and speciality beers unusual for the area. 6 Imperial

New licensees, Anna and Craig, took over the pub in October 2020 and offer a warm welcoming pub that was tastefully refurbished recently. The Dartmoor Jail Ale and St Austell Tribute are the regular live beers with one locally sourced guest ale from a Devon brewery complemented with a popular and varied food menu (no food Mon to Wed). 7 Horse and Groom

A family-owned pub run by Dawn, son Pierre and husband Oliver, who is a real ale enthusiast. Good home-cooked food is served, and six pumps dispense the beer, with two dedicated to real cider. Other pumps predominantly offer ales from local breweries in Devon and Cornwall. Third-pint tapas available. There is a long bar and separate dining area. A traditional Devon village pub, parts of which date back to medieval times, and features a large inglenook fireplace. Up to three live beers are served here. 9 Thing’s Happen Here

This is the former tap room of New Lion brewery, which is has unfortunately ceased brewing. It is run by the former management of the New Lion Taphouse and continues to serve up to four live beers. They work with Pizzalogica (Wed-Sat), who are also based at Meadowbrook, as well as many guest food vendors to bring fantastic food to enjoy with your drinks. 10 Albert Inn

A cracking old-school community pub which commemorates the scientist, Albert Einstein. Up to seven live beers are served here. It is the only public house in the Bridgetown district of Totnes and is home to darts, quiz and hockey teams. Based in an old chapel of rest, it hosts several beer and cider festivals and boasts a small, but delightful beer garden to the rear.

11 Bay Horse Inn

This welcoming community-minded inn is an excellent find at the very top of the main

shopping street in Totnes. The characterful pub is especially noted for its large, well kept beer garden, in which many events are held. It also hosts jazz nights, folk sessions, quiz nights and beer festivals. Up to four live beers are usually available. 12 Waterman’s Arms

A cosy, friendly. single bar, gem of a pub that it is in the back streets of the town, serving one of its three beers on gravity from a stillage behind the bar. Comfortably furnished with perimeter banquette seating and standard tables and chairs, together with stools at the bar, it has a gaming machine, and a juke box. A gem of a traditional town centre pub nicely situated on the main street, closely located to the bus and railway stations and only five minutes from the beach. Boasting an impressive long bar with ample seating, including a pleasant, covered seating area at the front. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with very reasonably priced beers on handpump. There are three regular beers, one guest beer and Sam’s traditional cider on the 5th, plus various bottles and polyboxes. Home-cooked, reasonably priced food is served every day until 9 pm, and there is a highly regarded roast on Sundays. 14 Torbay Inn

A real traditional pub with separate lounge and public bars dating back to the early 1600’s when the sea was on its doorstep, and it was opposite to a fish market hence address of Fisher Street. It is also documented that the Roundhead General Fairfax stayed at the inn prior to a civil war battle in Exeter. A mainly rugby supported pub amongst other sports, it also has regular live music, mainly Northern Soul and time is called via a ships bell recovered by a local diver from an old wreck.
