How to get to the Lake District by bus this winter

Travelling from West Cumbria?

  • The X4/X5 service operates from Workington to Penrith, via Cockermouth & Keswick

 

Travelling from Carlisle?

  • The 554 Service operates from Carlisle City Centre to Keswick, operating 7 days a week.
  • The 104 Service operates from Carlisle City Centre to Penrith, operating 7 days a week.
  • The 600 Service operates from Carlisle City Centre to Cockermouth, Monday to Saturday.

 

Travelling from Penrith? 

  • The X4/X5 Service operates from Penrith to Workington, via Keswick & Cockermouth.
  • The 508 Service operates from Penrith to Windermere, via Ullswater and Kirkstone Pass.

 

Travelling from Barrow-in-Furness?

  • The 6 Service operates from Barrow to Windermere, via Ulverston & Bowness-on-Windermere.
  • The X6 Service operates from Barrow to Kendal, via Ulverston, Newby Bridge & Grange-over-Sands.

 

Travelling from North Lancashire?

  • The 555 Service operates from Lancaster City Centre to Keswick, via Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside & Grasmere.
  • The 755 Service operates from Ocean Edge Holiday Park to Bowness-on-Windermere, via Morecambe, Carnforth & Kendal.

Q: Can you get around the Lake District by bus?

A: Yes! Getting around the Lake District by bus is easy. Leave the car at home and let our drivers take you where you need to go.

 

Q: How much are buses in the Lake District?

A: Single journeys are capped at £3* as part of the DfT fare cap. £3 is the maximum you will pay, but lots of our single fares will cost less than this. We also have our great value Central Lakes DayRider ticket costing £10.00. This ticket allows unlimited travel on all Stagecoach services within the Central Lakes zone. Travelling even further? Our North West Explorer ticket costing £12 allows unlimited travel on all Stagecoach services across the North West, including services in Cumbria as far as Dumfries on the 79 and Newcastle Upon Tyne on the 685.

A: Our Lakes by bus services cover all the following destinations; Ambleside, Bassenthwaite, Bowness-on-Windermere, Buttermere, Cockermouth, Coniston, Dungeon Ghyll, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Kendal, Keswick, Kirkstone Pass, Newby Bridge, Patterdale, Penrith, Rydal, Ullswater, Windermere and many more places too!

 
*The National Bus Fare Cap Scheme is a government funded scheme, available on most singles bus journeys across England. We are participating in the £3 fare cap scheme from 1st January 2025. £3 capped fares will be available for the duration of our participation in the scheme.
