Women In Bus - Angela Robb

23 May 2023

Today’s theme for Scottish Bus Week is Women in Bus, and we are looking at women that work in the bus industry. In this blog, we are showcasing Angela Robb, a safety driver and captain on our new autonomous bus service answering some questions on her involvement in the project and some words on of encouragement to women who might be interested in getting involved.

Firstly, Angela spoke about what attracted her to the autonomous bus project. Angela said:

‘I’ve been driving buses for about 26 years. I was interested in the project, as it was going to make history and I wanted to be part of that; to be one of the first people to operate an autonomous bus in public service. When I started driving some of the buses didn’t have powered steering or braking systems like they do now. To be given the chance to drive one of the world's most technologically advanced buses was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience that I couldn’t let pass.’

Angela went on to describe where she is now with the project:

‘I have completed my training and am now over one week in. I’m loving the experience, gaining confidence in the technology, and adapting to the new Captain role. I was the first female driver to operate in autonomous mode in full public service and take great pride in what I have achieved so far.’

She went on to say who inspired her to take part in the project:

‘My husband was my main inspiration. He always pushes me to be the best that I can be and supports me in everything I do.’

Next, she talks about how she wants to push herself and see more world firsts in the hopes for the next steps in her career:

‘I would like to continue with the project and keep pushing myself to be the best I can be. And maybe some more world firsts.’

Angela finished off by saying what she would tell any other woman who might be looking to get involved in the project/bus industry in general:

‘I would encourage any woman to join the industry and just because you are female doesn’t mean you can’t be just as good, if not better, than anyone else. As for the project, get involved and experience something not everyone will get the chance to do. It’s a once in a lifetime role.’
