Stagecoach Team take on Kelpies Climb for Age UK Charity

03 Jun 2025

  • Four employees from Stagecoach East Scotland climbed the Kelpies sculptures
  • Activity raised over £1200 for Age Scotland so far, with donations still incoming
  • Stagecoach and Age UK encouraging staff and customers to Act Now, Age Better

Stagecoach, the UK’s leading bus operator, is further supporting Age UK’s ‘Act Now, Age Better’ campaign, which encourages people to stay active today, to enjoy better health and wellbeing tomorrow. On Friday 30th May, four Stagecoach East Scotland employees took on the Kelpies Experience to raise funds for Age Scotland. The Kelpies Experience, which is new for 2025, is led by two expert guides to venture up the inside of the famous sculptures in Falkirk.

David Frenz, Stagecoach East Scotland’s Interim Managing Director, Micheal Skinner, Drew Fairbairn (both inspectors) and Stuart Grubb, a Supervisor at their Dunfermline Depot, all braved the Kelpies climb last Friday, with friends, family and colleagues donating £1290 so far to Age Scotland to encourage them to take on their expedition.

The four scaled and twisted their way up ladders, free hanging platforms, made their way over nets and cable crossings to reach the summit before taking in the view from the horse’s mouth. They then abseiled their way down the centre of the iconic landmark. The experience took 90 minutes to complete with participants always clipped to a sturdy safety cable, making sure safety is the top priority.

David Frenz, Interim Managing Director for Stagecoach East Scotland said: "We were delighted to join the Age Scotland team at The Kelpies Experience last week, and to raise a fantastic £1290 for the charity. It was a fantastic, unique experience to be involved in, and even better that we could raise funds and awareness of Age UK’s ‘Act Now, Age Better’ campaign. I’d encourage anyone who gets the chance to take part and find out more at https://www.ageuk.org.uk/actnow/.”

Launched on 29 April, the campaign promotes steps people in their 50s and 60s can take to stay healthy and independent as they age—an urgent message as over 40% of the UK population will be over 50 by 2040.

In East Scotland, Stagecoach is encouraging locals to use bus travel to explore their communities—whether it’s a market, museum, or nature trail—highlighting the health benefits of staying active, connected, and mobile.
