- Sheila King will now compete in the Bus Driver of the Year final in Blackpool.
Stagecoach, the UK’s leading bus operator, has crowned Sheila King, from Caerphilly depot, “Driver of the Year” at Stagecoach South Wales’s Bus Driver of the Year competition.
The Bus Driver of the Year event originated from a Coventry Corporation road safety competition first held in 1967. In the following years, more bus operations joined the event. Blackpool has been the venue for the National Final since 1982.
Drivers of local bus and inter-urban express services are eligible to compete if they have been employed as a bus driver since the 1st September of the year preceding the competition, and during the same period have not been involved in an accident for which they are in any way at fault, have not been absent from work for any period exceeding fourteen weeks continuous duration, and have no live endorsements on their licences.
The Stagecoach South Wales regional final took place on Sunday 6 July. Shortlisted drivers had to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and professionalism by undertaking a theory based and a practical monitored driving test.
Mark Tunstall, Stagecoach South Wales Operations Director, said: “I would like to thank all those who took part in the local competition along with our great training team who organised and marshalled the event.
We are thrilled that Sheila will take part in this year’s Bus Driver of the Year final in Blackpool. This competition is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and reward the efforts of our drivers.
We can’t wait to cheer her on in this years final being held in Blackpool.”
