Stagecoach South Wales Celebrates Success of £1 Bus Fares for Young People and Expansion

04 Nov 2025

  • Stagecoach South Wales celebrates the early success of the £1 single fare and £3 day ticket pilot for 16–21-year-olds, making travel more affordable for young people
  • The reduced fare scheme will be extended in November to include young people aged 5-15, ensuring even more families benefit from lower travel costs

Stagecoach South Wales is today confirming the successful uptake of the new £1 single bus fare pilot scheme for young people aged 16-21 and is looking forward to the programme's expansion to include 5–15-year-olds next month.

Stagecoach South Wales was one of the first operators to sign up for the £1 single fare pilot, which was launched in September. The one-year initiative is designed to make travel more accessible and affordable, helping young people connect with vital education, employment, and social opportunities across Wales.

The scheme, in partnership with the Welsh Government, offers 16–21-year-olds the opportunity to purchase a single journey for just £1. In addition to the single fare, an unlimited day ticket is available for only £3. To take advantage of these reduced fares, young people in this age bracket must apply for their free mytravelpass.

Stagecoach is pleased to announce the programme will be extended in November to include young people aged 5-15, ensuring even more children and families benefit from lower travel costs. Children aged 5-15 will not need a mytravelpass card to access the £1 single fare or £3 day ticket.

Martin Gibbon, Managing Director of Stagecoach South Wales, said:
"We’re delighted to see the positive response to this scheme. Stagecoach South Wales is committed to making travel as accessible and affordable as possible, and the scheme is already making a real difference to young people's lives by connecting them with opportunities and friends. We look forward to welcoming younger passengers onto our services when the programme expands in November."

Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration, said:
The success of the £1 fare pilot reflects the strength of partnership working between Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, and bus operators like Stagecoach South Wales. Together, we are committed to making public transport more accessible and affordable for young people. Expanding this initiative to include younger age groups will further support families and communities across Wales, helping more people stay connected to education, employment, and social opportunities.

The initiative is underpinned by Stagecoach South Wales’ strong commitment to reliability. The operator reported running an impressive 99.4 per cent of its scheduled mileage over the last 12 months, Only a small number of journeys were affected by cancellations, primarily due to external factors such as traffic congestion.

Martin added: "Our exceptional reliability record means young people can depend on us to get them where they need to be, on time. Combining this high standard of service with the newly reduced fares makes bus travel the smart, reliable, and affordable choice for young people across South Wales."

Stagecoach South Wales encourages all eligible 16–21-year-olds to apply for their free mytravelpass today to start saving on their travel costs.
