A new football initiative at the Portsmouth Stagecoach depot is bringing employees closer together, improving both their physical and mental wellbeing. What started as a suggestion from a fellow team member quickly transformed into a regular event, thanks to the dedication Stephen Fletcher, Portsmouth bus driver, who saw it as an opportunity to build stronger bonds among colleagues.
“I decided to take on the challenge after some thought,” explained Stephen. “I felt this would be a great chance for staff to get to know each other better while also supporting both their mental and physical health.”
The initiative started small, with just three participants at the first session. However, over the past three months, the team has grown steadily. The weekly Wednesday evening sessions now attracts 18 regular players from across the depot, all eager to take part, regardless of ability.
"We're inclusive to everyone, no matter their skill level," the driver said. "It’s been great to see how much people now look forward to our footy sessions. We've all become closer, taking time to get to know each other and helping one another out."
The benefits of the initiative have stretched beyond the pitch. Stephen, who once spent breaks alone or off-site, shared that participating in the football group has helped him feel more comfortable interacting with other colleagues. He isn’t alone in feeling the difference; others have also noted how it’s improved their comfort in the workplace, making the atmosphere at the depot more supportive and friendly.
In addition to the social and health benefits, the group has established a WhatsApp chat where members check in on each other. Stephen mentioned how the team rallied around him when he recently injured his ankle, helping him to his car and following up to ensure he was doing well. “It really showed me how much we’ve come to care for each other.”
The team’s inclusivity extends beyond Stagecoach employees, welcoming friends and family to promote health and wellbeing to a wider community. They also recently participated in a friendly football match against the First bus team.
The initiative has been made possible with support from Stagecoach Portsmouth and their depot union, whose contributions have helped cover necessary costs. The group’s next goals include attracting new players, helping other Stagecoach depots set up similar football teams, and organising charity matches to give back to the community.
"We’re really excited about what’s next," the driver added. "Not only is this about football, but it’s about creating a community that supports each other on and off the pitch."
This grassroots football initiative is shaping up to be a shining example of how team sports can foster camaraderie, boost wellbeing, and create lasting positive change within a workplace community.
