At Stagecoach, we believe in the power of community and the importance of mental wellbeing. Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions play a crucial role in supporting our drivers, ensuring they feel happy, comfortable, and valued in their roles. One of these dedicated champions is Dave Haxell, whose passion for helping others has made a real difference in the driving community.

A Passion for Helping Others
For Dave, the decision to become a Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion was deeply personal. His challenging upbringing—losing his father at a young age and growing up in foster care—shaped his desire to support others. These experiences fuelled his commitment to ensuring that no driver feels alone in their journey.
“I enjoy getting to know people, making friends, and being there for others. It’s not just a process—it’s something I love doing.”
Finding Strength and Confidence
Being part of the Stagecoach community has been transformative for Dave. His role has allowed him to assist others while also contributing to his own personal growth. Through his experiences, he’s gained confidence and assertiveness, realising that challenges can be overcome with the right support system in place.
“No problem is really as big as you might think it is. You come away from situations and question yourself, but at the end of the day, we all make mistakes, and that’s okay.”
The Importance of a Supportive Driving Community
Driving can be a demanding job, and mistakes—such as taking the wrong bus out or missing a turn—can feel overwhelming. In these moments, it’s easy to feel isolated, but knowing there’s a strong community to lean on makes all the difference.
“I think it’s really important for drivers to be able to speak to somebody. As a health and wellbeing representative, I play a vital role in ensuring drivers feel comfortable and supported. We all do, in our respective depots, to create a strong and caring driving community.”
A Message to Fellow Drivers
As part of the Mental Health Foundation’s ‘Together for Good Mental Health’ campaign, Dave shares this message with his fellow drivers:
“Always believe in yourself. Be whoever you are. At the end of the day, we’re all individuals, and your personality is uniquely yours. The driving community is here for you, and together, we can support each other for better mental health.”
At Stagecoach, we are proud to have individuals like Dave Haxell who go above and beyond to support their colleagues. Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Champions are committed to fostering a culture of support and wellbeing, ensuring that every driver feels valued, heard, and empowered within our community.
