Supporting Autism Awareness at Our Worthing Depot

16 May 2025

At Stagecoach South, we’re proud to share a heartwarming initiative from our Worthing depot, where three of our colleagues—Jamie Lewis, Sarah Hodgkison, and Adam Nye—have launched an Autism Awareness Group to support team members and spark vital conversations around autism.

The group, open to all staff, offers a safe, non-judgmental space where colleagues can come together to learn, share experiences, and better understand autism. The aim is simple but powerful: to raise awareness of the signs of autism, whether it's in our passengers or in members of the wider community, and to encourage compassion in our everyday interactions.

Worthing Awareness Group

Real Experience, Real Impact

This initiative was born from conversations between Jamie, Sarah, and Adam—each of whom has personal experience supporting individuals with autism. Jamie is a father of three, two of whom are autistic. His firsthand experience has made him a go-to person at the depot for questions about autism and ADHD. But with the demands of the job, meaningful conversations were often cut short. The new group now gives Jamie and others the time and platform to continue these important discussions.

Adam also brings a deep personal connection, supporting his grandson who is autistic. Alongside Sarah, who shares her own journey of understanding and advocacy, the trio is committed to making sure their colleagues feel equipped and empowered to be supportive, both on and off the job.

More Than a Ride

For individuals with autism, a bus journey can be overwhelming. Lights, sounds, and crowds can easily overstimulate someone on the spectrum. That’s why patience, empathy, and a friendly smile from our drivers can make a world of difference.

In fact, many autistic individuals see bus drivers as heroes—people who help them travel safely, reliably, and with dignity. Recognising the challenges parents might face when travelling with autistic children, the group encourages simple acts of kindness, like helping with a pram or allowing extra time to board or alight, as ways to make journeys smoother and more inclusive.

Creating a Culture of Understanding

By sharing their own stories, Jamie, Sarah, and Adam hope to build a culture where every team member feels confident in supporting passengers—and each other. It’s about making our services not only accessible but also compassionate, helping to foster a sense of community that goes beyond the wheels on the road.

This Autism Awareness Group is just the beginning, and we’re proud of our Worthing depot team for leading the way. It’s another step towards creating a more inclusive, supportive environment for everyone who steps on board.
