- Fares pay for day-to-day running of services, continued investment in new buses and other customer improvements
Stagecoach Yorkshire has confirmed changes to bus fares from Monday 2 January 2023.
Stagecoach has taken steps to protect its passengers with below inflation increases, with the new ticket prices adding on average just 10p per journey.
Stagecoach has also frozen the price of its recurring monthly ticket range offering some of the best value travel from as little as £1.18 per day and continues to maintain a discount for customers buying tickets on the Stagecoach mobile app.
Businesses across the UK economy, including in the transport sector, have been facing significantly increased costs which have put pressure on fares. Since 2019-20, Stagecoach has seen a 29% increase in maintenance costs, with the price of tyres increasing by 18%. Over the same period, utility costs have shot up by more than 40%, including an increase of 16% in the last year alone. Stagecoach has also agreed significant pay increases for its employees across the country, reflecting the cost-of-living challenges being faced by everyone.
Stagecoach has worked to absorb significant cost increases to keep fares increases below the rate of inflation for passengers.
Matt Kitchin, Managing Director for Stagecoach Yorkshire said: “Stagecoach has consistently delivered some of the lowest ticket prices in the country and we are committed to continuing to keep fares as low as possible for our passengers.
“Businesses such as Stagecoach have been facing significantly increased costs which continue to put pressure on fares. We have worked hard to absorb as many of these costs as possible to keep fares increases below the level of inflation.
“The money from fares goes towards paying for the day-to-day running of services, as well as ensuring we can continue to invest in improvements for our customers, including in new buses, and improved technology to help make travel easier.
“We’ve been working in partnership with the Mayor to introduce initiatives like the £2 capped single fare in South Yorkshire and the Zoom beyond young persons discount card.”
“We remain focused on offering a wide range of value tickets and have recently introduced a range of flexible tickets that offer better value and more flexibility.”
Stagecoach has recently announced that over £50m is being invested in 200 new vehicles across England, with 20 brand new low emission double deck buses in Sheffield in summer 2023 and 23 brand new zero emission electric buses for Rotherham and Dearne Valley in early 2024 being introduced for passengers in Yorkshire.
